Cumberland Volunteer Fire Department 250-336-2531

Going into December the rain storms so far this year for Cumberland have been heavy and long. They will continue but best to be prepared for everything: snow, rain, wind, and whatever may come our way. There is plenty of info on the internet to cover preparedness but I would just like to mention some safety points to be aware of around Cumberland. First of all the creeks around the forest areas can rise very fast and can be dangerous so please be very careful around them as they can be flowing very fast at times. Also ice safety: if we have a cold winter everyone likes the ponds to play on and even fish. Some of these are quite deep and it’s not so good to play on thin ice. The highways outside of Cumberland can pool a lot of water in rain storms so just a reminder coming home or leaving the Village beware of hydro planing and have good tires for the winter. In rain, snow, or ice storms refrain from using cruise control and simply slow it down a little out on the highway. Our department is out on the highway often because of this problem; people just traveling too fast for the road conditions. So please , take care out there, lets all make it a safe winter season. I hope our message is getting out as we did have a few fatalities out there last winter. Some of the incidents, when I look back at them, could have been much worse and lucky they were single car accidents. Also we need to take care driving and even parking around the Village. Make sure we don’t park too close to corners and that our vehicles are not sticking out on the roadway. We have been doing a really good job these last few months with all the construction on Dunsmuir. We’ve had very few incidents; I think everyone is using caution. Also we need to have patience and look out for each other on the congested road areas. Now for some fire safety talk. This is a great time to check Smoke and Carbon Monoxide alarms, not just the batteries but test if they are working. Practice your fire safety plan with your family. Also make sure wood stoves and gas appliances are in good running condition. This time of year you will be using your clothes dryer more and you need to not only clean your dryer screen but give it a wash and make sure water will run through it. Please don’t overload your plugs and make sure you have good clear area around your baseboard heaters. I would like to also recommend that we do not use candles when we get power outages. Try some LED lighting; they are very cheap these days and I think they cost less than candles. They are very safe if you fall asleep or knock one over; you might only kill the batteries. Christmas lighting can easily over load your circuits so you need to be careful there. So if all the safety checks are done in your house I’m sure you will have a good safe winter and a Merry Christmas. If you have questions or need our help or information call the Fire Hall, leave a message and I will try and get back to you as soon as possible. Prevention is proven to yield very good results. We are still looking for some more residents to join our Department to protect our community. We are grateful for the ones we have and I know there are more outstanding residents out there that could help us. If you like to help others, if when you help someone you get a sense of pride and fulfillment, can you give up some of your time to help and protect our elderly and our children and all residents when they call for help? Then you’re the person we need to come and join others like you. I would like to wish everyone a very Merry and Safe Christmas and Happy New Year. - Cumberland Fire Chief Mike WIlliams

LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW, LET IT SNOW Winter has come, and with it, the promise of snow. The next time Ullr turns our village into a beautiful winter wonderland, take a moment to step outside and savour the beauty of an individual snowflake. There is a saying that no two snowflakes are alike, and while there can be a stunning diversity of snowflakes, a closer look will show that they fall into a few basic types. While temperature and humidity affect a snowflake’s eventual shape, most exhibit some form of symmetry because of the ordered, hexagonal arrangement of the water crystals. This creates six-sided snowflakes with six-fold symmetry. Scientists used to think snowflakes could be categorized into seven basic shapes, but now they think there are 39 basic kinds of solid precipitation! If winter is too warm for snowflakes, a great online resource is the Smithsonian Institute Archives, which has a gorgeous collection of 19th century photographs by Wilson “Snowflake” Bentley, as well as some fun indoor snowflake activity ideas. For a more modern look, check out the photographs by Alexey Kljatov, who takes breathtaking pictures of snowflakes with a home-made rig. This is a continuing series on how to make math relevant for your child. Join us as we find different ways to introduce math and science concepts as the seasons change. Head over to our Facebook page at www.facebook. com/learncomoxvalley to find out about the 39 shapes, Kljatov’s method and more.
