President’s Message 3 AFS Fish Culture Section

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Your Fish Culture Section is busy preparing sessions for upcoming meetings, updating and expanding information on our web page, presenting best student abstract awards and publishing more newsletters. In all of these activities we try to bring you closer to the advancing science in our field, closer to the people with expertise and closer to the fish culture community. The three words bolded in the previous sentence represent what the Fish Culture Section tries to provide to members. A way to access advancing science, the chance to get to know experts in all the fields related to fish culture and interact with them to access their expertise, and a chance to enjoy some fun and comradery with the fish culture community as well as help provide a public voice for fish culturists. As a FCS member you have access to all of this and I hope you use and enjoy the newsletter, the webpage, the Facebook page, the North American Journal of Aquaculture and the opportunity to attend scientific meetings. If there are other services we can provide you as a member, please let me know what you are thinking. I am in the midst of a busy fish production season and the weather is changing and everything about growing fish is fast paced and exciting, challenging and fun. In my daily job I oversee production of sportfish in Texas, and much of our work involves growing spring fingerlings. Nevertheless, we are busy as can be all year long with the production and stocking of catchable-size catfish, production and feeding of forage fish, and planning and implementing all our production activities. I suspect most of us find our years getting busier and off-seasons getting shorter. One result of growing busier every year is that there is no real good time to take off and go to meetings. Lucky for us, the Fish Culture Section has two meetings each year. Our mid-year business meeting is held in conjunction with the World Aquaculture Society meetings (either the Aquaculture America meeting or the Triennial World Aquaculture meeting) held each February. I just attended the Triennial World Aquaculture meeting which was held February 22 to 26 at the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas. The meeting brought together members of the aquaculture community from all around the world, and it was an exciting meeting to attend. If February did not work out for you, then our annual business meeting in conjunction with the American Fisheries Society annual meeting provides another chance to meet with fisheries professionals and attend a Fish Culture Section business meeting. In 2016, the AFS annual meeting will be held in Kansas City from August 21 to 25.Thanks to Dr. Steve Lochman, the incoming President and Program Committee Chair for FCS, the Fish Culture Section has a symposium approved for Kansas City which is entitled “Hatchery Fish Biologist… A Career for the Future”. In addition to the symposium, there will be student affairs activities, the business meeting and a host of other interesting activities at the

In all of these activities we try to bring you closer to the advancing science in our field,

Kansas City meeting. As a member of the Fish Culture Section, I encourage you to attend the meeting if at all possible. If you cannot attend the meeting, please make use of the web page, publications, and communications, and then attend future meetings.

Unlock your inner fish nerd with these interesting fish facts…

Americans consume approximately 4.8 billion pounds of seafood annually.

Over 91% (by volume) of the seafood consumed in the United States is imported. Industrial/reduction fisheries (i.e., fisheries used for the production of fish meal and oil) comprise 20-30% of global fisheries. The most expensive fish to purchase for your personal aquarium is the platinum arowana ($400,000) followed by the freshwater polka dot stingray ($100,000) and peppermint angelfish ($30,000). What is the most popular aquarium fish? If you guessed the goldfish, you are correct. Although the blue fin tuna is widely known for fetching a hefty price at market, the Scottish lobster (Scotland) and Coffin Bay King Oysters (Australia) are the most expensive seafood found in the retail market. One of the largest lobsters ever caught off the coast of main weighed in at 27 lbs. Click here to go back to the Index
