Read Without Their Permission: The Story of Reddit and a Blueprint for How to Change the World By Alexis Ohanian

A WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER As Alexis Ohanian learned when he helped to co-found the immensely popular reddit.com, the internet is the most powerful and democratic tool for disseminating information in human history. And when that power is harnessed to create new communities, technologies, businesses or charities, the results can be absolutely stunning. In this book, Alexis will share his ideas, tips and even his own doodles about harnessing the power of the web for good, and along the way, he will share his philosophy with young entrepreneurs all over the globe. At 29, Ohanian has come to personify the dorm-room tech entrepreneur, changing the world without asking permission. Within a couple of years of graduating from the University of Virginia, Ohanian did just that, selling reddit for millions of dollars. He's gone on to start many other companies, like hipmunk and breadpig, all while representing Y Combinator and investing in over sixty other tech startups. WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION is his personal guidebook as to how other aspiring entrepreneurs can follow in his footsteps. the World By Alexis Ohanian For DOWNLOAD Review "It's rare that a thirty-year-old has a memoir worth writing-let alone worth reading-but Alexis Ohanian's WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION is an exception. This book is full of useful advice for entrepreneurs of all ages, and Alexis describes his remarkable accomplishments with an endearing combination of geekiness, enthusiasm, and sincerity." -Nate Silver, author and statistician, FiveThirtyEight blog, New York Times "WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION shows how anyone can use the power of the Internet to make the world a much cooler place to live." -Tony Hsieh, New York Times bestselling author of Delivering Happiness and CEO of Zappos.com, Inc. "Software is eating the world and WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION is your ultimate cookbook." -Marc Andreessen, cofounder and partner at Andreessen Horowitz "In WITHOUT THEIR PERMISSION, Alexis Ohanian shows you how to share your great ideas with an unlimited world online. Ohanian charts a course for you to build a business, or create a following, or just expand your world and those of people you haven't even met. What you'll learn from Ohanian isn't taught in any school or in any modern curricula. It is the knowledge of the future-to create a better world." - Soledad O'Brien, Journalist, CEO, Starfish Media Group "Alexis talking about the internet is like Sid Vicious talking about punk. Analysts merely adopted it, but Ohanian was born in it, molded by it, and is the voice of it. A fascinating story, but more importantly: a crucial insight into the healthy proactive mindset of the tech startup world that will keep defining the future." - Derek Sivers, founder of CD Baby, author of Anything You Want About the Author In additon to starting Reddit.com, Alexis Ohanian has also been instrumental in other successful online ventures, including HipMunk and BreadPig. He lives in Brooklyn but remains a diehard fan of the Washington Redskins. Customer Reviews Most helpful customer reviews 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Motivation for Entrepreneurs who are Looking for Uniques ways to Connect By Portia smith I am a senior at University of Baltimore enrolled in the survey Entrepreneurship course 300 and Without Their Permission: How 21st Century Will Be Made, Not Managed by Alexis Ohanian was my recommended reading. This novel discovers Alexis’s drive to becoming a successful entrepreneur or should a say a successful internet entrepreneur. In the reading, Alexis takes us on a journey that lead to his accomplishments. He starts with a brief background of his personal life then it goes into his undergraduate year at college; him and his roommate, Steve starts a company (My Mobile Menu) and get rejected; however, their passion they had for their business lead them to bigger and greater actions. Today, Alexis is the founder of Reddit.com and he was able to succeed “without anyone’s permission.” Some may people mention that Without Their Permission: How 21st Century Will Be Made, Not Managed help leads to building/creating/investing in newly established business in which I agree, but I highly view Alexi’s story as a motivation. Although this book was kind of a drag, Alexis’s story was truly inspiring; one of the main message he got across is that “more success comes from the internet.” I did not notice how much freedom and control us as entrepreneurs have over our own business/life as well as the freedom and control we have over the decisions we make. This book has inspired me to expand my startup business online. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Nice Beginning Guide, Hoped For More By Robert Waite Ent 330.001 University of Baltimore Student assignment. The book “Without Their Permission: How the 21st Century Will Be Made Not Managed” by Alexis Ohanian, one of the founders of Reddit, tells us his story about creating his businesses and defining him as a true entrepreneur. The story takes us thought his life, gives us glimpses into his family and tells us of his associations leading to his successes. Throughout the book we see how even failures can lead to successes; from poor directions (redefining the business plan) of a company to starting too quickly (printing business cards before a true company existed) to walking away (when to sell or abandon) even when to involve yourself in a process you are not familiar (political causes). This reads more like an autobiography and not a how to guide on creating an entrepreneurial environment. His information is often too vague and the book reads like a college freshman report. Beginning each chapter with a quote is cute as is the large number of

footnotes. Ohanian is a very smart, successful person and I really wanted to know more. He only touches on his life, and beyond his love of football and World of Warcraft we have to read too much between the lines, which is often wrong, to discover who he actually is. This was written mostly as a text book but should have been a story and I wish it had been told better. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Worth the read By Youmenar Hi, I’m a University of Baltimore student enrolled in the survey Entrepreneurship course. “Without permission” is my assigned reading for the class & this review is a part of the course requirement. Prior to reading the book, I had never heard of or been to the Reddit website, so that was pretty cool. The book starts off just giving a general background on the author and how he met his co-founder. The story really picks up as it trails the life of Alexis and the inception of Reddit, how they build momentum and the sale of Reddit. It was a great read; I read it in 2 days, which is record time for me because I usually read a chapter a day of any book. It also mentions start-up techno-firms he was involved in. I loved Alexis youthful, lighthearted approach on discussing the journey of entrepreneurship. Just goes to show, you never know who you’re meet, or the opportunity that would produce life changing results in this case, a very lucrative business opportunity. The time frame it took them from product creation to launch and sale was 18 months, which is in & of itself pretty remarkable. In the book, the author mentioned how easy it was to contact key decision makers in organizations he needed to make deals to launch multiple businesses. Maybe times have changed but there was no guidance on how he actually got the emails addresses, direct phone numbers etc. The book ends on his involvement with legislature that protected internet freedom. Still it was a great read with many take away points See all 134 customer reviews...
