This evening, Dr. Shannon Dulaney, who leads as the superintendent of the Iron County School District will be awarded as the Woman of the Year by the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce. Shannon has always valued education proclaiming by fourth grade that she wanted to be a teacher. When Shannon’s youngest son Travis was three and in preschool, she decided to go back to school to resume her goal to become a teacher and to earn an undergraduate degree in English with a minor in
music. It took a mere 9 years to finish this endeavor as she continued to raise her family, teach piano lessons and teach early-morning seminary for her church. She graduated from Cal State Fullerton in 1994, the same year that her oldest son Randy graduated from high school. That same year, Shannon got her first teaching job at Valley View High School in Moreno Valley California where her daughter, Kim, was in her senior year and her son Jon was a freshman. She taught Drama, Choir, and English.

Her Career and Accomplishments Shannon Dulaney’s first
teaching job for Iron County School District was in the Youth in Custody program for four years. During that time, she returned to school at SUU, to pursue her Master’s in Education. In 2000, Shannon was named the principal of the newly created Southwest Education Academy. In 2005, she became the district’s Special Programs director and entered Utah State’s doctoral program. In 2010, now Dr. Dulaney, was recruited to apply for an open position at BYU, Provo. She worked there for 3 years training future and current school administrators. Her Purpose Shannon loves her family, the Iron County community, and her work in education. She works with her district team every day to ensure that all students and educators are empowered to learn at high levels. Her philosophy in life, as well as her career, is reflected in the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson. “The purpose of life is not [only] to be happy. It is to be useful, to be honorable, to be compassionate, to have it make some difference that you have lived and lived well.”
