Responsibility for People
Be responsible under the Health and Safety at Work Act for all work activities that affect self & others. No line management responsibility. Responsible for own conduct and behaviour.
Responsibility for Assets
To look after all tools and equipment provided in the interests of safety & for the purpose of carrying out personal duties. Be responsible for the general housekeeping of all nominated work areas and associated assets advising your direct report of all concerns. Responsible for any company vehicles used from time to time. Personal Safety clothing/footwear etc.
Responsibility for Finance
No direct financial responsibility. To take responsibility for unnecessary / wasteful use of spares and consumable items from store. To ensure the timely completions of work activities allocated to self.
Decision Making
To develop decision making skills as experience is gained during the apprenticeship period. To always check decisions with direct report prior to action with a view to becoming more self-motivated and able to work on own initiative as the apprenticeship progresses.
Communication
Required to conduct oneself in a calm, polite and professional manner at all times. Effective communication with direct report for all engineering / personal issues. To develop a thorough understanding of reporting and handover procedures with regard to all maintenance activities to include manual & IT reporting processes. To complete all qualifications / learning evidence successfully & compliant with agreed targets. Ability to record and present ‘work records’ and ‘spec sheets’ clearly and neatly
Experience & Knowledge
Continuous on the job training to maximise development opportunities within the set time frame to reach a standard such that exposure / experience to all aspects of port related equipment can be formally assessed at the appropriate stage. Such experience & knowledge will be the subject of record. (i.e. review docs)
Qualifications
Minimum of 4 GCSE’s ‘A*-C’ grades (or equivalent) including English, Maths, Science and an engineering related subject OR a relevant engineering NVQ or VRQ level 2. Full Driving license (DVLA) will be required prior to completion of the apprenticeship.
Ability to concentrate for extended periods of learning. Able to follow instruction with diligence. Retain / recall information for future participation General level of awareness and concentration required for working and learning in a live engineering environment.
Mental Demands
Ability to organise and prioritise time to complete all required qualification / learning evidence successfully & compliant with agreed targets.
Physical Demands
Academic studies require frequent periods of light physical exertion. Practical training is more physically demanding but not continuous.
Health & Safety Exposure
Apprentices are ‘sheltered’ from unavoidable exposure to risk to a large extent in year 1 but not exclusively. Years 2 & 3 are more demanding and both hazard awareness gained from experience & compliance with all company health and safety procedures minimises risk exposure.
