Secretary, AWBI, Chennai Sub: Killing of Female wild elephant inside Tea Estate which is a part of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. Sir, The photograph enclosed herewith show the dead body of a female wild elephant inside a Tea Estate located at Meppady Forest area adjacent to Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. This dead body was traced at around 6 am IST yesterday. The 6 year old elephant was not able to consume food or water for past few weeks. In many Tea Estates, the planters use various types of poisonous insecticides which pose threat to wild animals including elephants. This type of killing of wild animals is a frequent incident in this area. The Forest Authorities are not equipped with any type of mechanism to counter this type of rampant use of poisonous insecticides inside the tea plantations which thrives inside the elephant corridor of Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. The forest authorities are yet to arrest any person in connection with this type of killing of four wild elephants inside Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary for a period of past four months.
