Dear Parents

My first few days at KGV have been really positive and it was great to see all our students return on Tuesday. I heard so many interesting stories of holiday travel, adventures and was impressed by the overall positivity and confidence of our students. Students have settled into classes and have been well supported by our KGV staff. I feel a real sense of pride in our school and a focus on the learning and wellbeing of each and every student. Great schools always put the students first in all that they do; I saw this in action over this first week at our school. This week our new Year 7 students have brought a high level of excitement and energy to our school as they engage in our induction program. A big thank you to all the staff involved in the delivery of this program that strives to make sure that from day one, our Year 7 students feel supported and connected to KGV. I am also going through a steep learning curve this week, as I quickly begin to understand how KGV works and what makes our school such a positive and dynamic place. I would like to thank our parents and community for your ongoing support and looking forward to working with you as we strive to make KGV an even better place for the students and community we serve.

Dear Parents, Whether you are an existing member of our community or joining us for the first time, I would like to extend a very warm welcome to you at the beginning of the new school year. This is always an exciting time of year and the energy reverberating across the school as everyone settles back in has most certainly been catching. The end of this week marks the culmination of the first phase of life at KGV for our Year 7 students. As their induction programme draws to a close it has been fabulous to see how positively they have engaged with all that they have undertaken in their first few days at KGV. It was a pleasure to see and meet so many parents as part of the Year 7 Parent Induction event and I look forward to seeing you across the many events that we hold throughout the school year. Part of the new school year is getting organized with equipment and uniform. A key part of this must be making sure that your child’s belongings are clearly labelled with their name. Through the PTSA lost property system, named property makes its way back to their owner far more effectively than those items that do not bear their owner’s stamp. Your help with this matter would be much appreciated. Balance is a key part to life at KGV. This balance must include the school work as well as time to be engaged in activities outside of the classroom. The CAS Fair on Friday 25th August will be the focal point for students to find out about what is on offer in terms of sports, extra­curricular, student­led and performing arts activities. Activity sign up information will be shared through the bulletin, with sign up opening after the end of school next Friday. Looking slightly further ahead, to allow you to book in your child’s trip to the hair dressers in a timely fashion, school photographs will be taken from Tuesday 29th August through to Friday 1s t September. Year 10 students will be completing their Yellis Test on the afternoon of Monday 28th August. This will take place from 2.00pm to 3.30pm, after the end of school. The reason for completing the testing at this time is to minimise the disruption to lessons. More details will follow from our Exams Office at the start of next week. KGV Agreement Dear Parents and Students, The KGV agreement has been uploaded to the Lionel evidencer system for all students. We ask every parent and student to read it and reply to us through the evidencer system. Please use this as an opportunity to highlight possible areas of concern or areas where students will need support. The final page of the agreement document might draw out areas which require comment or follow up. Evidencer will be used throughout the year for students to upload work and evidence of a range of activities. Teachers, students and parents can see and discuss evidence items at any time.

CAS Dear Parents and Students The start of term will see the return of KGV’s CAS Fair on Friday August 25th. The CAS fair is an opportunity to showcase the vast array of extra­ curricular activities on offer here at KGV and allow students from all years to plan their extra­curricular activity program and sign up for what they are interested in. Advertised at the CAS Fair will be well over 100 different extra­curricular activities; co­curricular activities, sports teams, student led CAS activities, community service opportunities and again this year, a variety of external CAS providers. The CAS Fair is a great start to the year clearly showcasing the diverse, rich extra­curricular program on offer at KGV. After the CAS Fair, many more activities will come online so students and parents should pay careful attention to the bulletin and should be encouraged to find out what else is being offered or even better, plan and propose their own activity. It is also very important that parents approve student’s participation in CAS activities, by responding to emails sent once a student has signed up through Lionel 2. This year we would also like to extend the invite to parents. I will send out more details nearer the time, but please do consider coming along to the CAS Fair to see what is on offer for your son/daughter.

LET LET Welcome It was wonderful to meet so many of you on Thursday and then have the opportunity to speak to all parents about the way we can support academic development at KGV. Reading a timetable is a new skill that Y 7 students need to acquire in secondary school. Please find some recommendations to help your child with this below:  1)      Print the timetable  off Lionel. – Students who don’t do this have to resort to pulling their laptop out and turning it on every single lesson. 2)      Use the printed timetable to make a colour coded, easy to timetable. Only include the Subject and room. Make multiple copies and place in the locker, on the fridge etc. 3)      Make a strip timetable – these are much easier to read ‘on the go’ for students. Just remember to mark each day either week 1 or 2 – see attached.   Have a good weekend.  Karen ABELL Teacher

Community Development Dear Community members, Let us first extend our warmest welcome to you.  From smiles we see in school, we are confident you have had a restful summer! The school year has begun with much excitement. We had induction week filled with activities for all. Students caught up with friends and made new ones too. Parents of recent admission joined us in a fantastic social afternoon where they got to meet teachers and other members of our school community.  New Principal Mark Blackshaw has been busy around campus learning, listening and leading. Do introduce yourself to him when you bump into him at KGV! We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that school photos will be taken between 29th August to 1st September this year. Students will have the opportunity to take individual photos and be a part of the whole school photo(click here for schedule). Please feel free to order as many photos as you wish in all size or form to capture your child’s memorable time here at school. Orders will be made directly to Techni photos as we do not charge for the service. Our second notice to you from the Communication’s team is that our Parent weekly notice will now be sent on Fridays, at noon. The information on the notices will give you some highlights of what has happened and some information to help you and your child prepare for the week ahead. By sending this notice to you before the end of the day we hope you will be able to review it before things are put away for the weekend of rest and relaxation.
