Yom Tov Is it permissible to prepare floating wicks on Yom Tov? It is preferable to prepare floating wicks by inserting the wick through the floater before Yom Tov, since some Poskim prohibit this on Yom Tov. According to all Poskim, if the floater hole was not punched through and the remaining piece in the center of the hole is preventing the wick from being inserted, the remaining piece may not be removed in order to insert the wick. Is it permissible to grind or sort foods on Yom Tov? On Shabbos, it is not permissible to grind foods that grow from the ground, or to cut them into small pieces. On Yom Tov, it is permissible to grind foods if their taste would be compromised by grinding them before Yom Tov. However, foods whose taste would not be compromised at all (such as nuts) should be ground before Yom Tov. If these foods were not ground before Yom Tov, they may be ground on Yom Tov using a shinui; for example, by grinding directly onto the counter and not onto a plate. Similarly, foods that would be compromised only slightly may also be ground on Yom Tov using a shinui; for example, since maror will retain most of its strength if placed into a well-sealed jar, it should be ground with a shinui if it was not ground before Yom Tov. Note: When grinding any foods on Yom Tov with the use of a grinding utensil, a shinui should be utilized. Sorting is similar to grinding in that if doing so before Yom Tov would not adversely the food (for example, sorting a mixture of nuts and chocolate), it should be done before Yom Tov, and if this was not done and sorting is necessary on Yom Tov, the sorting should be done with a shinui.
Is it permissible to carry a key on Yom Tov outside an eruv? It is permissible to carry a key if the key is necessary to allow reentry into one’s home on the same day. However, if a safe location is available to place the key (as one would do on Shabbos), or if it is feasible to leave the key with a tenant, then one of these options should be used and carrying the key should be avoided. If one leaves the house on Yom Tov and does not intend to return before nighttime, the key may not be carried. If there are multiple keys on the key ring, the keys that are not needed should be removed before leaving the house so that they are not carried unnecessarily.

Is it permissible to adjust the temperature on an electric stove? It is not permissible to adjust the temperature on an electric stove. It is similarly not permissible to adjust the temperature of an oven if the oven functions with any electrical component (note that most current ovens do).
Is it permissible to bring outdoor garbage bins out to an area outside of an eruv so that the garbage will be collected? If an empty garbage bin is necessary to be available on the same day in order to be able to place additional garbage bags in it, then one is permitted to bring the bin out for pickup; otherwise, it is not permissible to do so. If garbage bags were already in the bin at the onset of Yom Tov, then the bin becomes muktze and it is prohibited from being handled in a regular fashion. An exception to this would be if the bin is full and therefore repulsive in its current location.
