front panel (1 fabric)
Seam allowance is 3/8”

RECOMMENDED FABRICS: lightweight-medium cottons, linen, linen/cotton blends

NOTIONS: 1” width elastic, coordinating thread, *12 large (1/4”) eyelets, *1 yard of rope trim * for nautical version

After prewashing fabric, cut out pant patterns WITH the crotch seam allowance. Cut 2 of the front, 2 of the back pants and with rightsides facing each other, match one of the front pieces to one of the back pieces. Stitch along the outerside of pant. Serge raw edge. (fig1)

Open piece(s) with rightside facing up. Press seam with seam allowance facing towards backside of pant. According to your child’s size, measure from the bottom edge of pant and mark where the bottom edge of the pocket will go.

Take your front pocket pieces and mark where eyelets will go, using your pattern as a guide. Pin the lining of pockets to the front pocket pieces with rightsides together. Stitch along the entire edge with a 2” opening along the bottom edge of pockets.

Trim the corners and clip notches along the curved edges. Turn rightside out and press along seam.

Topstitch 1” from top edge of pocket and add eyelets to where you placed your markings.

Once topstitch and eyelets are done, find the center by folding the pocket vertically in half and gently press the folded corners, making a visible crease

Match bottom crease on pocket to the marking on pant leg and top crease to the seam.

Pin in place and topstitch.

Repeat steps 8 & 9

Start making the casing for the elastic

Cut elastic to suit child’s waist and insert elastic through casing. Stitch elastic ends together and stitch closed the opening.

Basic Pant
If you’re looking for a simple, no-fuss pant this is it. While the little one goes down for a nap, you can whip this baby up and have it ready to wear when the babe wakes. I know... I did it!
