Youth​ ​and​ ​Education​ ​Committee​ ​Meeting​ ​Minutes Wednesday,​ ​October​ ​18,​ ​2017​ ​ ​@​ ​6:30​ ​PM Location:​ ​1932​ ​Arthur​ ​Avenue,​ ​Room​ ​403-A Chairperson:​ ​Moussa​ ​Siby The​ ​Youth​ ​and​ ​Education​ ​Committee​ ​met​ ​on​ ​Wednesday,​ ​October​ ​18th,​ ​2017​ ​at​ ​the​ ​Bronx​ ​Community Board​ ​6​ ​office​ ​located​ ​at​ ​1932​ ​Arthur​ ​Avenue,​ ​Room​ ​403-A,​ ​Bronx,​ ​NY​ ​10457.​ ​During​ ​the​ ​meeting​ ​the following​ ​members​ ​were​ ​present:​ ​Claudette​ ​Coles,​ ​Moussa​ ​Siby,​ ​Jannie​ ​Armstrong,​ ​and​ ​Laura​ ​James. On​ ​Friday,​ ​November​ ​11,​ ​2017,​ ​Bronx​ ​Community​ ​Board​ ​6​ ​is​ ​hosting​ ​an​ ​Open​ ​Mic​ ​Night​ ​at​ ​University on​ ​the​ ​Streets​ ​from​ ​6:00​ ​PM​ ​to​ ​8:00​ ​PM.​ ​Moussa​ ​also​ ​discussed​ ​having​ ​a​ ​youth​ ​summit​ ​in​ ​the​ ​Spring and​ ​will​ ​be​ ​working​ ​with​ ​the​ ​committee​ ​to​ ​finalize​ ​details. Ben​ ​Samuels-Kalow,​ ​the​ ​lead​ ​founder​ ​of​ ​Creo​ ​College​ ​Prep​ ​Charter​ ​School,​ ​spoke​ ​about​ ​his​ ​new proposed​ ​charter​ ​school​ ​serving​ ​students​ ​5th​ ​through​ ​12th​ ​grade.​ ​The​ ​charter​ ​school​ ​will​ ​focus​ ​on computer​ ​science​ ​for​ ​students​ ​and​ ​plans​ ​to​ ​have​ ​all​ ​8th​ ​graders​ ​complete​ ​high​ ​school​ ​course​ ​credit before​ ​9th​ ​grade.​ ​Mr.​ ​Samuels-Kalow​ ​is​ ​applying​ ​for​ ​a​ ​charter​ ​and​ ​will​ ​know​ ​if​ ​his​ ​school​ ​is​ ​approved​ ​in Spring​ ​2018.​ ​He​ ​proposes​ ​to​ ​open​ ​the​ ​school​ ​in​ ​School​ ​District​ ​12,​ ​which​ ​Community​ ​Board​ ​6​ ​has​ ​a part​ ​of​ ​in​ ​Fall​ ​2019. Andrew​ ​Foglia,​ ​the​ ​Lead​ ​Founder​ ​of​ ​ONE​ ​Collegiate​ ​Charter​ ​school,​ ​spoke​ ​about​ ​his​ ​proposed​ ​K through​ ​8​ ​charter​ ​school.​ ​The​ ​charter​ ​school​ ​would​ ​have​ ​an​ ​extended​ ​school​ ​day​ ​and​ ​school​ ​year​ ​in addition​ ​to​ ​a​ ​co-teaching​ ​model​ ​in​ ​every​ ​classroom.​ ​Mr.​ ​Foglia​ ​is​ ​also​ ​applying​ ​to​ ​NY​ ​state​ ​for​ ​a​ ​charter and​ ​will​ ​know​ ​if​ ​his​ ​school​ ​is​ ​approved​ ​in​ ​Spring​ ​2018.​ ​He​ ​proposed​ ​to​ ​open​ ​the​ ​school​ ​in​ ​School District​ ​12,​ ​beginning​ ​with​ ​a​ ​Kindergarten​ ​and​ ​1st​ ​grade​ ​class​ ​in​ ​Fall​ ​2019.
