TREATY OF WAITANGI Statement We acknowledge New Zealand's cultural diversity and the unique position of Māori as tangata whenua. We know that through knowledge and understanding our children will gain a deeper respect for our dual heritage. Winchester Rural School’s commitment to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi is reflected through the following: Guidelines Partnership and consultation: We recognise and value all cultures at our school, and acknowledge the special position of Māori in New Zealand society. We work together to achieve the best environment for success for our children. We consult with our Māori community in creating and maintaining our school charter which is the guiding document of our school, and access cultural advice as appropriate. Valuing Heritage: We will endeavour to develop class programmes on our true history and Treaty issues by looking at our curriculum and seeing how we can affirm the intent of the Treaty in all aspects. We want our children to become familiar with our pre-Treaty history, Treaty intent and content together with our post Treaty history and our understanding of the Waitangi Tribunal. Protection and self-determination: We respect each person's culture and their right to follow their cultural direction. We promote the value of te reo (Māori language) and tikanga Māori (Māori culture). See (Recognition of Cultural Diversity procedure) Participation: We promote Māori achievement (see Improve Educational Outcomes for Our Maori Children procedure) and equal opportunities to all members of the school community, including our staff and our children who need extra support at school.
