Counseling Department Vision The Cedar Shoals Counseling Department envisions all students will graduate with the knowledge, skills, and character to succeed in our community and the global society. Students will achieve their postsecondary goals with the competence and readiness gained from a rigorous high school curriculum and positive high school climate. Cedar Shoals High School graduates are culturally competent and recognize the importance of giving back to the community.
Counseling Department Mission The Cedar Shoals High School Counseling Department addresses the academic, social, and career needs of all students through the delivery of a comprehensive school counseling program. Counselors work to remove barriers to learning to promote equity and access in secondary education and post-secondary success. Our school counseling program is collaborative in nature – building relationships with students, families, teachers, administrators, community members, and district leaders – and is accountable through data analysis and program reevaluation to adapt to the evolving needs of our student population.
10th Grade Field Trip to ACCA (Oct. 21, 2016): 10th grade students are invited for a tour of the Athens Community Career Academy Junior Parent Night (Nov. 3, 2016 6pm): to inform parents of important timeline tasks students and parents must do to prepare for senior year and post-secondary enrollment GA Apply to College Week (Nov. 7-11, 2016): Counselors will provide one-on-one assistance to seniors with the college application process ASVAB Testing (Nov. 15, 2016): multiple-aptitude battery that measures developed abilities and helps predict future academic and occupational success in the military. Core Curriculum Lessons:
Our 2016-2017 Program
Counselors deliver classroom lessons or large class meetings on the topics of academic planning, college/career guidance, and social/emotional wellbeing. These take place throughout the year and are grade-level appropriate. FLASH Curriculum: The Counseling Department delivers the following CCSD approved classroom lessons on the topics of:
10th Grade: 1) Healthy Relationships 2) Online Safety: Sexual Violence Prevention
11th Grade: 1) Undoing Gender Stereotypes 2) Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity
12th Grade: 1) Coercion and Consent 2) Partner Communication
Upcoming Family Workshops and Important Student Events:
Ninth Grade Activities Fair (Sept. 9 & 12, 2016): 9th grade students will learn about and sign up for extracurricular activities Fall & Spring College and Career Fairs (September 29, 2016 and March 3, 2016): to expose juniors and seniors to a range of colleges and career opportunities. Parents are welcome as well. FAFSA Completion Workshop (Oct. 6th 6pm) Workshop for seniors and their families to assist in FAFSA completion. PSAT (Oct. 19, 2016): All 10th grade students will take a practice SAT exam to prepare and expose students to the exam. Fall Parent Conferences (Oct. 12, 13, & 14)
