Nau mai, hoki mai Dear Parents, Next week we have our school cross country. For those who have never been involved, it is very much a fun filled afternoon, with a focus on participation. There will be many whose expertise is in running and they will be giving it their all to do the very best they can. For others, the achievement may well be running without stopping or reaching the finish line. No matter where they come, we will acknowledge them all and give them a clap. I do want to encourage everyone to wear their house tee shirts for the event. It looked fantastic last year. Please ensure that the children come prepared for a cool day and they have warm clothing for before and after the race. The event is held on the bottom fields at the Loburn Domain. Parking will be in the top car parks and parents will need to walk down the hill. If you are not too sure where to go, please ask.
when the girls were young and if I did the right thing as they were growing up. Parenting isn’t easy and it takes a lot of time and effort, invariably you make a lot of mistakes along the way. So it was great to read the statements made by psychologists from Harvard University about the good things parents do to raise good kids. 1. Spend quality time. • Play their favourite game together • Read them a book • Ask them questions about their day 2. Become a role model • Always admit your mistakes and apologise to them • Talk about problems and finding solutions • Find time to take care of yourself, only then you can take care of others 3. Teach them values • Teach them every day to be kind • Make them take responsibility for their actions and stick to their commitments. Do not just let them quit a sport or end a friendship. It is always easier to just give up, but it is not always the right thing to do. 4. Teach them gratitude • Remind your child to be grateful in every day life • Teach them to show respect and appreciation for people (family members, teachers, neighbours) in their lives • Be the role model and do not take people and things in your life for granted 5. Show them the bigger picture • Teach your child empathy – teach them to comfort a crying kid and reach out to a new classmate • Have conversations about different people and their lives. Talk about people with different religions, beliefs, communities and countries • Teach them not to have prejudices and to show kindness to people around them And lastly (from me), we are never too old to ask for advice.
As part of our ongoing review of curriculum programmes and practices at school, we would like to get feedback on our Positive Behaviour Programme. As well as getting your feedback, we will also be talking to the students and staff. The survey will be open until Friday 26 May. Go to https://goo.gl/04OMez for the survey. Thank you. Loburn School Quiz Night June 16 A reminder that we would love all families to donate one item for our school raffle. I am always looking out for great articles to further both my professional and personal knowledge, especially around parenting. My own girls are 13, 15 and 17 yrs old, and as you can imagine this brings a new set of challenges and opportunities for me as a father. However, I often think back to

Please ensure your child has plenty to drink, a good lunch, warm clothes, and a positive ‘can-do’ attitude. All students are encouraged to wear their house tee shirts. These can be purchased from the school office. The start is down on the bottom field. The children will sit in their year groups and parents are to use the grand stand to watch the event. North Team We have been writing adventure stories about the Seniors going on a William Pike Challenge. Can you guess how the stories end? Adventure at Cave Stream By Mason Mr Priddy tied the rope to everyone’s belt. “Check your headlamps, everyone,” he said, “It’s going to be pitch black in there.” The nervous Year 8s turned on their lights and stood in a big line. Mr Priddy took the roll and checked if everyone had a hat, head torch, rope, glow stick and torch. The Year 8s could hear the spooky river thrusting into rocks and breaking into little pieces. They could see spooky, red eyes. “Let’s go!” he said. Two hours later they got to a foggy dead end but they saw a bridge. They could see lots of creepy crawlies like spiders, worms, giant worms, snakes and other weird animals. Mr Priddy was brave but the Year 8s weren’t brave at all. Mr Priddy went first while one of the Year 8s had a machete. He dropped it. It cut the rope holding the bridge. Mr Priddy fell into the stream and floated away ……..
Adventure at Cave Stream By Leon In January Mr Priddy, Zac and Ethan went to Ashley Gorge. It was a sunny day and they were looking forward to going rafting because they were doing the William Pike Challenge. Mr Priddy said to Zac and Ethan that the rapids were faster than he thought. They put the small yellow raft in the deep blue water. They got in but they couldn’t get the paddles in the water because the water was going too fast. They set off and nearly hit a rock because they were going so fast. There were too many rocks in the river. There were two paths and one had a boulder in the way. The raft bumped into the rock and Mr Priddy fell out. He floated away down the other path ……

Loburn School Production 4 and 5 July This year we are doing a Wearable Arts show. Our theme is the power of Wind, Water, Earth and Fire. Over the next few weeks we will be designing and making our costumes to reflect these elements. We want to focus on using recyclable materials rather than buying new items. Next week we will send out some lists of materials that the children have specifically asked for. In the meantime, if you have anything you might think would be helpful for costumes, please bring it to your child’s class teacher. For example, chicken wire, stuffing or wool for clouds, ribbons, materials, large cardboard boxes. Thanks, Katie Steele We are finalising the production schedule for the last week of the term. At this stage we will have 2 shows, one on Tuesday 4 July and the other on Wednesday 5 July. One show will be around 5pm and the other 6.30pm. Once we have confirmed this we will let you know.
