In our first fifteen months, through 2010, dedicated Green Bellevue volunteers have laudably accomplished the following:
Developed and filed articles of incorporation, by laws, mission and vision statements and a logo Elected an 11 member Board of Directors Established 8 initiatives to promote Bellevue sustainability Applied for and received IRS 501 (c)(3), non‐profit status Constructed a web site www.greenbellevue.org Started a Facebook page www.facebook.com/Green.Bellevue with over 150 friends the first year Formed a membership tracking database for regular communication with members –collected 190 email addresses and 18 professional e‐letters sent Conducted 15 monthly public town hall meetings Coordinated 8 Board meetings, plus activity planning sessions Orchestrated Bellevue’s first Earth Day celebration Formulated plans for a city‐wide Earth Day in 2011 Celebrated Mayor Gary Mixan organizing a Green Bellevue Committee by dedicating an engraved boulder in Faulkland Park Walked in the Arrows to Aerospace and Veteran’s parades, handing out information about recycling and how to receive a recycle bin Organized an educational “Green Speak Chautauqua” Initiated and presented an environmental educational segment for the Leadership Bellevue class of 2010 Performed the first city Arbor Day program with school children Earned a Community Arboretum designation, one of only four in the state, from the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum Recognized by the American Rose Society as an American Rose City for the 700 public roses planted by volunteers Researched, submitted, and awarded $14,000 in grants to purchase trees Planted 165, 5‐foot trees in eight city parks Formed the city’s first Tree Board which developed our first Tree Ordinance Completed the requirements, and applied for the National Arbor Day Foundation’s Tree City, USA designation Filmed a correct tree planting guide for TV public education Enlisted Omaha Tree to trim Washington park trees at no cost
Submitted grants for 2011 tree plantings Collaborated with Leadership Sarpy, the NRD and Veterans to develop bioretention gardens at the Veterans Home Instituted a network with schools, business, clubs, churches and civic organizations to encourage sustainable practices Worked in collaboration with the Green Omaha Coalition Conducted the first annual, city wide, park and street litter removal with a recycling component‐‐100 volunteers collected 200 bags of litter and recyclable material Partnered with Offutt personnel to clean up the Base Lake area with reciprocation from Offutt on the Bellevue parks and streets cleanup Joined with Energy Rescue to recognize Bellevue schools and students for their recycling efforts Assisted development of Hands of Heartland recycling center, Think Green Bellevue! Publicized phone # 293‐3135 on website, at parades and National Night Out encouraging calls to obtain a recycle bin and increase recycling efforts Established a task force to significantly expand recycling efforts Helped to develop and enhance the Bellevue Farmers Market Supported updating our Fire Code and ban on open burning Applied and awarded an NRD storm water management grant of $29,177 Assisted flood recovery at Haworth Park Rose Garden Introduced the process to become certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a Community Wildlife Habitat Initiated the process to establish a Complete Streets program
