FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1.) Considerable time seems to have ELAPSED BETWEEN the healing of the official’s son in ch. 4 and this incident. 2.) vs 2 For readers unfamiliar w/Jerusalem John shares insight of his “eyewitness” account by informing us of the UNIQUE DETAIL of the pool in that it has “five porticoes” (porches). 3.) vs 3 The earliest and most reliable manuscripts omit the end of vs 3 and all of vs 4. Most modern translations include this passage, but mark it as unauthentic or questionable. (ex- NASB) 4.) vs 5 The exact nature of the MAN’S ILLNESS is not stated; however, we do understand he is to weak to move on his own. 5.) VS 6 Jesus turns his ATTENTION towards this incredibly needy man. We are told he already knew the man’s CONDITION, which reminds us God is aware of our situation. 6.) vs 7 Like many people, this man FAILED to grasp the MAGNITUDE of God’s offer. Instead of looking to the one who made his legs, he responds by expressing belief in what he knows. 7.) vs 9 We are reminded that God’s creation RESPONDS IMMEDIATELY to His powerful commands. 8) In vs 9 we see there is a DELIBERATE action of Jesus which is far bigger than just this incident of healing. Jesus shows us again that God is not constrained by man’s definition of HOW and WHEN HE will work. 9.) Like many people, the Jews had become experts at substituting “Tradition” in exchange for a REAL LIFE with God. 10.) vs 10 When the Jews say “it is not permissible” – they are reflecting RABBINIC law and not biblical law. 11.) vs 12 Clearly the Jewish authorities are more concerned with the MINUTIAE than with the “weightier matters” of Justice and Mercy. 12.) vs 14 When Jesus says- "Stop sinning" it presupposes the illness this man had known was very possibly caused by his own sin.

13.) An Important truth to remember; Scripture is very clear that SOME SICKNESS is directly related to a deliberate disobedience of God’s word. 14.) vs 15 Jesus knows this man will turn Him in to people who are determined to kill Him, yet he still HEALS THE MAN and then seeks him out a second time. 15.) vs 17 Gives us another BRUSH STROKE: God has NOT suspended His activities. The Sabbath restriction does not apply to God; He does not need to rest.

FOR THE WEEK AHEAD In what sense is God still “working”? 1.) In a general sense -God maintains His creation and bring about His plans and purposes: “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” Rmns 8:28 2.) Another sense - God is “at work” bringing about Salvation. Do you see evidence of this in your own life? How?_____________________________________________________ The Most important question you will ever hear and answer is this: “Who is Jesus?” Why do you think Jesus didn’t heal everyone at the Pool? ____________ __________________________________________________________
