Course Description

In this course, students will become acquainted with the history of journalism, including law and ethics, as well as the media’s impact on society. Further, students will study the basics of journalism, news gathering, writing, editing, and layout. Students will be prepared to participate on the yearbook and/or newspaper staff in a full capacity.

Students will demonstrate understanding and application of the study of journalism, law and ethics, and various forms of media. Students will demonstrate understanding and application of the study concerning mutliple facets of writing for various forms of media. Students will analyze forms of journalistic writing.

Students will turn in an electronic portfolio at the end of the term which includes major projects and reflections of work done in and out of the classroom. Students will learn and apply concepts of journalism style rules to their writing. Reading is an essential component of becoming an educated journalist. Students will read and evaluate examples of quality writing. Students will write and design numerous submissions to the yearbook and newspaper. Students will write various stories which will include but are not limited to a news story, a feature story, critical review, personal column, and editorial. Students will be graded on daily participation, assignments, projects, quizzes and tests. Students will create pages for the yearbook and/or newspaper using digital photography and web design aspects. Culminating Course Conclusion. (may include a final exam or final project). Electronic Portfolio

Assignments and projects are graded on a straight percent scale. Each assignment and project is given an appropriate point value. At the end of the quarter, all points are added up and the grade earned will be a percentage of the total points earned. Final grades are based on total points. See student planners and plagiarism policy handout.

Make-up Work: All assignments are expected to be turned in on time. To earn full credit, all homework must be made up within two days of returning to school following an excused absence. If you are absent for a quiz or exam, they must be made up upon returning to school (before or after school). If you have an extenuating circumstance please stop in and see Mr. Hayes. Refer to the student handbook for further clarification.

Special Needs Considerations: ALL special needs will be met at East Ridge High School. Please discuss circumstances with your teacher. Special needs accomodations will be made based on student IEP and 504 plans.

Tardy Policy: Students who show up more than 10 minutes after the bell rings will be marked unexcused. 1st Tardy equals a teacher detention. 2nd Tardy equals a teacher detention and a call home. 3rd and subsequent tardies equal an office referral and consequences will vary.

Consult school use policy. Technology will be used when appropriate. In general cell phones should not be present in the classroom and will be confiscated unless specific consent for use is given.
