1 Thessalonians

FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1.) Thessalonians is written to people in a strategic place at a strategic time that recognizes God consistently invites us to experience more of Him. How we respond determines what God will do among us. 2.) v 1 Three men speaking w/single voice – Paul is the author 3.) Believers must realize the church has an identity which transcends the physical location, which is in God. 4) v 3 Reminds us what God’s people are meant to look like. Paul tells them they are on his heart because they have a faith that works, labor that loves, and a hope that endures.

GREEK WORDS USED TODAY Agape - unselfish, sacrificial living for others Kopos (kop'-os) toil (as reducing the strength) pains :- labor + trouble, weariness :- to the point of exhaustion Hupomone (hoop-om-on-ay') cheerful endurance, constancy Dunamis (doo'-nam-is) force; specially miraculous power -: might (-ily) power, strength, violence Mimetes (mim-ay-tace) imitator – (English mimic) Tupos (“exact reproduction”) the mark (of a blow), an impression, stamp (made by a die) Execheo (ex-ay-kheh'-om-ahee) to “echo” forth, resound (report)

[used only here in NT] means “to blast forth very intensely”

5) v 4 Tells a believer that the- work of faith, labor of love and steadfastness of hope is a mark of our election in Christ. 6) v 5 The power of the gospel explodes when the hearer allows the truth to penetrate and speak to the heart. As it comes alive it stirs the spirit within and brings conviction and change. 7) v 6 Paul opened the eyes of the Thessalonians to the influence they were having in their city and beyond.

IN STEP WITH GOD ISSUES FOR DISCUSSION – FROM 1 THESSALONIANS CH 1

1. 2.

8) The people of the Thessalonian church, in the midst of a pagan environment and with out a veteran church leader, had, in the power of the Holy Spirit become imitators of Jesus.

3. 4.

9) v 8 Reports about their great faith were being heard around the Roman empire, echoing from city to city. As a result the Lord’s message [trumpeted] throughout the region.

5.

10) The vibrancy of our faith not only spreads the gospel, it influences how people receive it. 11) The Church made the most of its strategic location. Because Thessalonica was a hub of travel and trade, people coming through Macedonia from east and west along the Egnatian Highway heard the word of the Lord from true believers, as did those who visited the city by ship and used its port facilities. 12) This passage reminds us that the church is on display to the world. A biblical community led by God’s Word which is patterned in love, will find itself to be a strategic people, at a strategic time, in a strategic city.

What roles does the church play in our society? How does New Hope function as an imitation model? A reputation model? How far is the influence and reputation of New Hope reaching? What do you thank God for as you pray for your church? What does it mean to you that God has chosen you? How can you explain this to a person who does not believe in Christ? What part does your free will play in conversion? For whom are you a model of Jesus Christ? What kind of model are they seeing?
