Ch 1- qualifications of the church leadership Ch 2- character and conduct within the church Ch 3- character and conduct of the church in the world Titus is EVANGELISTIC- purpose is to prepare to be an effective witness
2) Vs 1 Paul calls himself a BOND-SERVANT, meaning he owned nothing. He had no life to call his own. All was subject to his Master, every thought and every effort. To be a CHRIST FOLLOWER in the fullest sense is to be a bond-servant of God. 3) Vs 1 Paul is also called an APOSTLE, meaning one who is sent with a specific message and speaking with the authority of the one who sent him. AUTHORITY did not derive from the messenger but from the sender 4) The two objectives for the church which Paul was directly given by Jesus were to advance FAITH and KNOWLEDGE.
Greek words used today: Doulos (bond-servant) Gk- owned nothing, not even his own clothes- required to carry other’s burdens. Totally reliant on their master’s provision and direction. Apostolos ap-os'-tol-os; Gk- a delegate; specially an ambassador of the Gospel; officially a commissioner of Christ:- he that is sent Eklektos ek-lek-tos’; Gk- select; by implication favorite:- chosen, elect Epignosis ep-ig'-no-sis;Gk- clear perception of truth; recognition, full discernment Kerugma kay’–roog-mah; a proclamation (especially of the gospel):- preaching; to herald (as a public crier), especially divine truth:- to proclaim
Thoughts to consider in the week ahead: Paul called Titus “My true child in the faith”, giving him a rich identityWhat is your identity- what is it that marks your life? To what are you personally committed? What is your calling? In what life direction are you personally headed? Who are you cultivating a deep and intimate relationship with? Who are you personally pouring into?
5) According to Vs 1our FAITH is intricately linked with a FULL and COMPLETE "knowledge of the truth". 6) The “Truth” Paul speaks of is SAVING truth, the truth of the gospel. Accordingly, the “Knowledge” of God’s truth produces GODLINESS. 7) According to Vs 2, the “hope” of our promised eternal life is ASSURED because it is grounded in the absolute CHARACTER of God.
How can I live the principles of this message?
8) Vs 3 The “proclamation” (Kerugma) is an EXPOSITORY teaching of the Word of God; because this is missing in most churches today the people of God are starving for the TRUTH. The “Proclamation” represents an UNCOMPROMISING commitment to God’s message. 9) Vs 4 A deep and personal bond developed between Paul and Titus as co-laborers and in their mentoring relationship; for this reason Paul referred to his dear friends as his “TRUE CHILD” in the faith. 10) The “common faith” spoken of in Vs 4 refers to saving faith, which Titus shared in COMMON with Paul and each of us share in today.
How might these issues affect my prayer life this week?
