Msg-Tough Grace - Titus Pt 3 Titus 1:10-16 1/23/11 1.) What do you believe is the big Fail in the church today? 2.) The Bible is not a resource for truth but the source of truth It is not a supplementary text but the only text Its truths are not optional but mandatory 3.) Titus faced an enemy similar to that which we face today in the modern church. There was present a mixture of legalism, MAN-MADE TRADITIONS, and pressure to conform to the DEMANDS of the world. 4.) vs 10 - As the gospel was taught and the church began to increase, false teachers quickly followed. They are identified as EMPTY TALKERS and DECEIVERS
Greek words used today: Anupotaktos (an-oo-pot'-ak-tos); unsubdued, insubordinate:- disobedient, unruly Mataiologos (mat-ah-yol-og'-os) idle talker :- vain talker - properly to “lay” forth empty, (literal) profitless, vain discourse Apotomos ap-ot-om'-oce - (to cut); abruptly, peremptorily:- sharply (-ness) “to cut,” as with a knife or ax Pistis (pis'-tis) persuasion; conviction (of truth, or the truthfulness of God), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; (Gospel) truth itself:- assurance, belief, believe
Thoughts to consider in the week ahead: The free gift of salvation involves repentance of sin and acceptance of God’s grace alone. Self-sufficient humans attempt to add something that can be externally observed and for which they can claim credit. What are you to do when you discover false teaching?
5.) vs 11 tells us these false teachers “must be silenced” which means their mouths must be STOPPED. The literal meaning of the phrase is “TO MUZZLE. 6.) vs 12 tells us the characteristics of the island’s inhabitants: LIARS, EVIL BEASTS, AND LAZY GLUTTONS. Indicating that instead of living for GOD, they were living for the passions of their APPETITES.
How can I live the principles of this message?
7.) vs 13 gives strong indication that the people of whom Paul is writing about are from WITHIN the CHURCH. 8.) vs 13 - What Titus was to do about this situation? Certainly not stand quietly by and let them take over. He was instructed to bring REPROOF which was to cut with PENETRATING force.
How might these issues be carried into my prayer life?
9.) vs 15 -The “pure” persons referred to are those who are pure by virtue of their FAITH alone, not through works. The basic deviation of every false religious system is WORKS BASED RIGHTEOUSNESS; that you can somehow become “as God”.
10.) vs 16 says- “they claim to know God”, meaning that false teachers hold “to a form of godliness”, but in reality they have become DETESTABLE in God’s sight. Jesus told us- “You will know them by their fruits” Mt 7:16.
1.) 2.) 3.) 4.)
Be careful who is speaking into your life. True authority always begins with God’s Word. Beware of individuals who will not put themselves under authority Failure on our part to confront false teaching is indicative of an indifference regarding God’s truth. 5.) Firm (grace filled) confrontation can result in stronger relationships and restored unity.
