FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1.) vs 29 The declaration “Behold, the Lamb of God” is the HIGHPOINT of John’s witness to the world. It is within this clear statement we see that God the Father is about to PROVIDE A LAMB for the sin of the world. 2.) John has been telling the Israelites the Messiah is coming, even though he’s not known the identity for certain. - He may have had his suspicions, but he does not have absolute proof. The absolute PROOF comes at the baptism of Jesus. 3.) The next clear “brush stroke” we see of God through Jesus is as a SACRIFICIAL LAMB ready to take away our sin. 4.) vs 32 All the Gospel books (Mt, Mk, Lk, & John) speak clearly of the specific event of the Holy Spirit descending like a dove and remaining upon Jesus. The Phenomena of the descent of the Spirit and the voice from heaven identified Jesus unmistakably as the predicted Messiah. 5) vs 34 As a result of what John WITNESSES, he now knows for certain who the Messiah is and from this point on he POINTS DIRECTLY to Jesus. 6.) In vs 37 we see John has done PRECISELY what he’s been called to doprepare men to follow the Messiah. Even without knowing for sure the outcome, he OBEYED God and did exactly what he was told to do. 7.) vs 38 The question Jesus ask is encouraging them to VERBALIZE what they want from Him and crystallize just what they are looking for. The Lord asks the question to CHALLENGE them to consider their motives. 8.) vs 39-41 While there is no record of what Jesus discussed with Andrew and John, it’s clear they CONCLUDED he was the Messiah also. 9.) vs 42 Jesus’ PENETRATING, omniscient vision saw not merely Simon, but the man He would SHAPE him into. 10.) vs 42 When God gives a new name to someone it reflects His sovereign purpose in changing THE DESTINY of the one whose name He has changed.

FOR THE WEEK AHEAD *A portrait stroke- In verse 39 we see evidence that Jesus never puts off sincere seekers, he’s never too busy to show compassion. A consistent characteristic of God’s nature is that of receiving those who are desperate to see Him.
*“Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house” Lk 19:5
*Another portrait stroke- GOD sees YOU, GOD knows YOU, and God names you- and gives you a new start. Who has the right to name someone? Only your parent can name you; it’s the right of your loving heavenly father to give you a new identity. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe in His name… John 1:12
