Romans—Part 44
August 26/27, 2017 Romans 1-7 Summary
FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) Overall theme of Romans: God’s righteousness and how that translates to God making me righteous. 2) 1:4 The most conclusive evidence of Jesus’ position as God is the resurrection. 3) 1:18 Every sin is, first and foremost, against the God of the universe. Therefore, God has to take action against sin. 4) Sin is any action or attitude contrary to the rule of God. 5) Wrath is God’s active opposition to everything opposed to Him (not an emotional outburst). 6) 1:18 Evidences of God’s Wrath: Death—When Adam and Even trusted Satan’s word above God’s Word, the death sentence was immediately passed on all humanity. Decay—Creation is cursed (Romans 8:20). Relationships—Man’s hostility with fellow man originates with being hostile toward God. 7) Many people underestimate the magnitude of God’s standard of righteousness and also underestimate the enormous depth of their own sin. 8) The only way to escape God’s judgment is to allow God to transfer His righteousness to you. 9) 3:22 Just as no one is good enough to be saved, no one is so evil that he cannot be saved. Everyone apart from Christ is equally sinful, everyone in Christ is equally righteous! 10) 5:8-9 Jesus took the wrath of God on the cross so that I will not experience the final wrath. “ROMANS ROAD” Begin by recognizing…”For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God (3:23). There is a consequence to our sin…”For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (6:23). Jesus died to pay the price of our sin…“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (5:8). Because of Jesus' actions, our response is to trust in His death as payment for our sin and to believe that God raised Him as evidence of that payment…“If you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved” (10:9). Salvation is available to anyone who will trust in Jesus as Lord and Savior. “…for everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved” (10:13). Through Jesus we have a restored relationship of peace with God…”Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (5:1). “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (8:1).
What is God like? Is Jesus really God? Why is there suffering? Why do men reject God and Jesus? What are election and predestination? How can a loving God send people to hell? Why are there sex perversions, hatred, crime? What is the standard by which God condemns? How can a sinner be forgiven and justified by God? What is the importance of Christ’s death and His resurrection? How do Christians deal with issues that are neither right nor wrong? How can a person who has never heard the gospel be held spiritually responsible?
QUOTES “Man stands before God like a little boy who swears with tears that he has not been anywhere near the jam jar, and who with an air of outraged innocence, pleads the justice of his position... in total ignorance of the fact that a spoonful of the jam has fallen on his shirt under his chin and is plainly visible to all but himself.” ~Dr. Donald Grey Barnhouse TODAY’S SONGS “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” words and music by Thomas A.
