John 2:12-25

Following the Message 1.) Genesis 3:8 shows us that at one time God walked with man in close fellowship and DESIRED for us to be in His PRESENCE. 2.) Because of the BREACH in RELATIONSHIP, the original meeting place with God (the Garden) is replaced with a Temple/Tabernacle. 3.) The “Passover” spoken of in vs 12 was a spectacular event occurring once per year. It represented BIG BUSINESS for Jerusalem merchants.

4.) vs 14 In the Temple, the Court of Gentiles was filled with merchants who bought FRANCHISE RIGHTS to sell sacrificial animals, and also exchanged money into the proper currency used in Temple offerings.

p1 of 1 HEBREW AND GREEK WORDS USED TODAY

*Paniym, paw-neem'; the face Halak (haw-lak') primitive root; to walk :- (all) along, be conversant, Peripateo – to be occupied with/the same path

FOR THE WEEK AHEAD: Jesus death rendered the temple obsolete and Jesus resurrection established a spiritual temple which is present in His followers. According to the Bible, if you are a follower of Jesus, you are now a Temple. If Jesus took the defilement of the Temple so seriously, how do you think He feels about the way you and I use our bodies?

5.) vs 14 As a result of all the business taking place, the Temple was NO longer an ENVIRONMENT where you could seek God’s presence. 6.) vs 15 When Jesus “overturned the tables”, his action was not polite. This is a PHYSICAL ACTION. Jesus brought the EFFORT to overthrow the tables and literally threw them out of HIS Temple.

How can you apply the principles of these truths this week? 7.) To Jesus the primary issue has always been what is OCCUPING the space which belongs to God. Just like with “the garden”, in this passage we see a CORRUPTION of the space where God meets with man. 8.) Vs 18 When “the Jews” come to Jesus, they are CHALLENGING His authority. They want a miracle as proof that He can do what He has done.

9.) vs 19 The Jews assume Jesus is speaking of Herod's temple. But John understands He was speaking of His body. This represents a major shift in thinking for followers of God. 10.) Jesus reminds us, the ONLY place we need to have authority to speak for God is in the DEATH and RESURRECTION OF Jesus!

Remember, when you act on what you know God wants you to do, it will cause some division - Do it anyway!
