Far Off, Brought Near—Part 10 April 13/14, 2013 Ephesians 4:25-32
10)4:32 Being unconditionally kind is the character of God.
FOLLOWING THE MESSAGE 1) 4:25 The Christian lays aside falsehood so he is free to do righteous work and therefore advance the church.
11)4:32 Being tender–hearted carries the idea of being compassionate, a feeling deep inside, to the degree of a gnawing psychosomatic pain due to empathy for someone’s need.
2) 4:25 Telling the truth does not require telling everything we know. 3) 4:26 It is difficult for us to practice a truly ‘holy anger’ because our emotions are corrupted by sin. 4) 4:26 It is possible to be angry and not sin; we must settle the issue quickly.
GREEK WORDS Apotithēmi—laying aside/discarding, stripping off Parorgismos—not momentary boiling–over rage, but rather a deep–seated, determined and settled conviction Pikria—bitterness; reflects a smoldering resentment, a brooding grudge–filled attitude (Acts 8:23; Hebrews 12:15) Blasphēmia—slander; ongoing defamation of someone which rises from a bitter heart
5) 4:27 Although the ruler of this world was defeated by Christ at the cross (Colossians 2:14–15; cf. Hebrews 2:14–15; Ephesians 1:20–22), he does not surrender without a struggle, and he continues to make his powerful influence felt. 6) 4:28 Beyond providing for his own family, the Christian’s desire to earn more money should be for the purpose of being able to give more and to help more. 7) 4:29 Three characteristics of wholesome speech: • Edifying—constructive, instructive, encouraging, uplifting • Appropriate—according to the need of the moment, constructively contributing • Gracious—loving 8) 4:30 We do not lose our salvation because of our sin actions, but we can lose the joy of our salvation and the fullness of the Holy Spirit’s blessing. 9) 4:31 These are the sins that break fellowship, destroy relationships, and ultimately weaken the church.
