2014 – 2015 COMMUNITY Charlottesville, Virginia (population 43,475) is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, 100 miles southwest of Washington, D.C. Its scenic location and the presence of the University of Virginia are two compelling attractions of this community. Charlottesville High School students have dedicated parents who are supportive of their children, teachers, and the school’s programs. The community government is interested in its schools and strongly supports its educational programs. The estimated 2013-2014 per pupil expenditure of $15,519 is well above the national average.
SCHOOLS The Charlottesville City School Division is comprised of one preschool, six elementary schools (K-4), one upper-elementary school (5-6), one middle school (7-8), one high school (9-12), and one vocational/technical school, which is jointly operated with the Albemarle County Schools. There are 4,022 students in the Charlottesville City Schools, 1,181 of whom attend Charlottesville High School. Like many urban high schools, the student body reflects the diversity of the community it serves. Thirty-eight percent of the students are Black, forty-seven percent are White, and fifteen percent are other minorities including Central and East Asian, Hispanic, African and Eastern European.
PROGRAM A faculty of 98 certified teachers offers a comprehensive curriculum which stresses academics, but includes ample opportunity for students to participate in the study of the visual and performing arts, vocational, and technical fields. Class size is small, offering students many opportunities to participate and develop leadership skills. Students are encouraged to take part in a variety of co-curricular activities designed to supplement the core curriculum. Students are issued tablet personal computers for work on assignments at school and at home. Students select their programs from academic courses which are differentiated by level. The mathematics, science, social science, and English departments offer academic, honors, dual enrollment and Advanced Placement courses. The world language program offers Chinese, French, German, Latin, and Spanish from the academic to the Advanced Placement level. In addition, students may elect to participate in one or more of the fine arts programs including vocal and instrumental music, visual arts, theatre arts, photography, television production, and creative writing courses. Students interested in the practical or applied arts may select courses which include automotive trades, building trades, computer science, cosmetology, culinary arts, marketing, technology, hospitality, health and medical sciences, and work-based learning experiences. The minimum number of academic classes a student may take is three; the maximum is seven; the average is five. Students may also enroll in college courses at the community college and the University of Virginia.
CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES More than 65 percent of Charlottesville High School students participate in a comprehensive extra-curricular activity that includes 55 Virginia High School League (VHSL) sanctioned ninth grade, junior varsity, and varsity programs. Students participate in about 40 clubs and activities. Many students participate in more than one activity. The men’s and women’s sports programs are highly respected and enjoy a reputation for excellence. The band, chorus, orchestra, theatre, and visual arts programs are recognized throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia and have earned the designation “Blue Ribbon School” from the Virginia Music Educators Association. Highlights for the 2013-2014 school year included advancement to conference competition in Football, Boy’s Basketball, Girl’s Basketball, Boy’s Soccer, Golf, Field Hockey, Girl’s Lacrosse, Swimming, Boy’s Tennis and National Recognition in Scholastic Bowl.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS Charlottesville High School offers two diploma options: a 22credit General Studies Diploma and a 26-credit Advanced Studies Diploma. Special Education students also have the option of receiving a Special Education Diploma or a Modified Standard Diploma. A Governor’s Seal is awarded to students who maintain a “B” average, meet the minimum requirements for an Advanced Studies Diploma, and successfully complete college-level coursework that will earn at least nine transferable college credits while in high school.
