International School of Aruba
2016-2017 School Profile Head of School: Mr. Dennis Willeford Counselor: Ms. Leigh Ann Vanderheyden History The first English school in Aruba was opened in Seroe Colorado in September 1929. It was owned and operated by Lago Oil and Transport Co. Ltd. to provide for the schooling of the expatriates' children. During the 1960s, the school also opened its doors to dependents of island residents on a tuition basis. With the closing of Lago in 1985, the parents of the remaining students formed the International School of Aruba (ISA), a non-profit foundation, to ensure the continuation of English-language education on the island. In March 2004, the Board of Directors passed the governance and ownership of ISA to International Schools Services (ISS), a not-for-profit organization of Princeton, New Jersey. In April of 2015, ISA celebrated the 85th anniversary of American International Education in Aruba. School and Community ISA moved to its new, more central location in the Wayaca Residence area in August of 2005. From this improved position, ISA aims to reach out to more of the island’s population. The campus boasts a turf soccer field (the first in Aruba), beach tennis courts, and a new visual and performing arts wing. There are 217 students enrolled in Montessori through Grade 12. Our students represent 36 different countries. The class of 2017 has 11 students. The teaching staff is compromised of 30 faculty members from 8 different countries with 70% holding advanced degrees. Accreditation The school is accredited by Advanced Education. A full successful accreditation review was conducted in April 2013. The Dutch Program is accredited by the Nederlands Onderwijs in het Buitenland (NOB). Academic Calendar There are 36 school weeks divided into 2 semesters. Grades are available at the end of each semester. High school students follow a regular schedule- attending each class 4 times per week totaling 200+ minutes. A full-time schedule consists of 7 major classes (1 credit) and 1 minor class (1/2 credit). Academic Program
