CATHOLICISM’S CORE UNDERSTANDING OF THE HUMAN CONDITION Distinctive expectations for graduates of Catholic schools are determined and shaped by the vision and destiny of the human person emerging from our faith tradition. This Christian anthropology or worldview reveals the dignity and value of the person. Our tradition tells us God creatively and lovingly calls each of us into the wonder of life, sustaining us by the power of the Holy Spirit, throughout the human journey, into life eternal. We acknowledge that the journey includes moments of brokenness and sin. We recognize in the person of Jesus, the risen Christ, the human face of God sharing our life in order to heal us of our brokenness and liberate us from sin. This Christian vision of the human journey is best understood within the context of relationship. It is accomplished in community, in solidarity with brothers and sisters in the Church and beyond. Catholic education views human life as an integration of body, mind and spirit. Rooted in this vision, Catholic education fosters the search for knowledge as a lifelong spiritual and academic request. The expectations of Catholic graduates, therefore, are described not only in terms of knowledge and skills, but also in terms of values, attitudes and actions. ONTARIO CATHOLIC SCHOOL GRADUATE EXPECTATIONS: Vision of the Learner Catholic Education views human life as an integration of body, mind, and spirit. Rooted in this vision, Catholic Education fosters the search for knowledge as a lifelong spiritual and academic quest. The expectations of Catholic graduates, therefore, are described not only in terms of knowledge and skills, but also in terms of values, attitudes and action. (The Institute of Catholic Education)

An effective communicator , who speaks, writes and listens honestly and sensitively, responding critically in light of Gospel values. A reflective, creative and holistic thinker who solves problems and makes responsible decisions with an informed moral conscience for the common good. A selfdirected, responsible, lifelong learner who develops and demonstrates his/her Godgiven potential. A collaborative contributor who finds meaning, dignity and vocation in work that represents the rights of all and contributes to the common good. A caring family member who attends to family, school, parish and the wider community. A responsible citizen who gives witness to Catholic social teaching by promoting peace, justice and the sacredness of human life. School Chaplaincy “A faith community stands at the intersection of three dreams : our personal hopes, the dream for the Kingdom of God and the dream of a community”. (Whitehead, 1989) ●
●
Throughout the academic and liturgical year, we have opportunities to pass through this crossroad; the link that connects our personal hopes with God and the faith community we call Frank Ryan CIS. Every student and staff member is invited to discover, nurture and share their gifts to help strengthen the dreams of this faith community
. ●
The Chaplaincy Leader works closely with the Pastoral Team, administration, staff and students to facilitate the spiritual growth of the school through prayer, liturgy, ritual action, social justice and spiritual accompaniment.
A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AT FRANK RYAN CATHOLIC INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL Frank Ryan Catholic Intermediate School proclaims all people are created in the image and likeness of God, and as such, have the right to be treated with dignity, respect and fairness. We promote a learning environment in which all members of the school community feel safe, included, and accepted wholeheartedly. Parents/Guardians play an important role in the education of their children and can support the efforts of the school staff in maintaining a safe, inclusive learning environment for all students when they:
1. Show an active interest in their child’s school work and progress; 2. Communicate regularly with the school; 3. Help their child be prepared, appropriately dressed, and ready for each school day; 4. Ensure that their child attends school regularly and on time; 5. Encourage and assist their child in following the rules of behaviour; and, 6. Assist school staff in dealing with disciplinary issues involving their child.
4

Respect, Civility, and Responsible Citizenship All members of the school community must: • respect and comply with all laws; • demonstrate honesty and integrity; • respect differences in people, their ideas, and their opinions; • treat one another with dignity and respect at all times, and especially when there is disagreement; • respect and treat others fairly, regardless of, for example, race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, or disability; • respect the rights of others; • show proper care and regard for school property and the property of others; • take appropriate measures to help those in need; • seek assistance from a member of the school staff, if necessary, to resolve conflict peacefully; • respect all members of the school community, especially persons in positions of authority; • respect the need of others to work in an environment that is conducive to learning and teaching; • not swear at a teacher or at another authority figure at school. The Frank Ryan Code of Conduct acknowledges that responsible citizenship involves appropriate participation in the civic life of the school community. Active and engaged students are aware of their rights, but more importantly, they accept responsibility for protecting their rights and the rights of others. Principals: Under the direction of their school boards, principals take a leadership role in the daily operation of a school. They provide this leadership by: ● demonstrating care for the school community and a commitment to academic excellence in a safe teaching and learning environment; ● holding everyone accountable for his or her actions and behaviour; ● empowering students to be positive leaders in their school and community; ● communicating regularly and meaningfully with all members of their school community. Teachers and Other School Staff Members: Under the leadership of their principals, teachers and other school staff members maintain order in the school and are expected to hold everyone to the highest standard of respectful and responsible behaviour. COMMUNITY PARTNERS & THE POLICE: Through community outreach, partnerships will be enhanced and new partnerships with community agencies and members of the community (eg. Aboriginal Elders) will also be created. Community agencies are resources that boards can use to deliver prevention or intervention programs. Protocols are effective ways of establishing linkages between boards and community agencies and of formalizing the relationship between them. These partnerships must respect all applicable collective agreements. The police play an essential role in making our schools and communities safer. The police investigate incidents in accordance with the protocol developed with the local Ottawa school board. Maintaining a Safe, Accepting and Inclusive School Community at Frank Ryan CIS Frank Ryan CIS supports the use of positive and restorative practices to maintain a safe and orderly school. Such practices may include: program modifications or accommodations; class placement; positive encouragement and reinforcement; individual, peer and group counseling; conflict resolution; mentorship programs; antibullying and violence prevention programs; sensitivity programs; student success strategies. Progressive Discipline In circumstances where a student will receive a consequence for his/her behaviour, the principal shall apply the principle of progressive discipline. Progressive discipline measures may include, but are not limited to: meeting with the student’s parent/guardian, student, and principal; withdrawal of privileges; withdrawal from class; detention; restitution for damages; peer mediation; restorative practice; transfer; consultation, etc. Progressive discipline involves the use of a continuum of prevention programs, interventions, supports and consequences that include learning opportunities for students.
