Introduction YUHSD offers courses in state approved Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. All programs include a coherent sequence of courses leading to student attainment of the state standards in the program. CTE offers exceptional courses with industry-current curricula and state-of-the-art equipment. Upon graduation, students are prepared to transition successfully to postsecondary education and are equipped with the necessary skills to begin working in a specific career. Many programs offer opportunities for students to earn college credits through dual enrollment while enrolled in CTE classes. CTE students have opportunities to participate in the Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) that is directly related to their program. DECA, FBLA, FCCLA, FEA, HOSA and SkillsUSA are recognized as integral parts of the CTE programs and provide career and leadership development, motivation, and recognition. In addition, these organizations provide students with the opportunity to compete at the local, regional, state, and national levels.

Marine Corp JROTC The Marine JROTC curriculum covers diverse areas to include: marksmanship, physical fitness, land navigation/mountaineering, public speaking, military history, customs and courtesy, leadership, first aid, close order drill, drug and alcohol awareness, current events, “real world” social skills, team work and problem solving techniques. This program is not combat oriented, nor is it a recruiting activity. The objective is to teach young adults to become informed and responsible citizens, develop leadership skills, strengthen character and promote an understanding of the basic elements and requirements of national security. Additional objectives are to help students develop self-discipline, confidence and integrity. Semi-annually, the unit travels to the West coast so that cadets can receive “first hand” knowledge of selected active U.S. Marine Corps units and their mission. Physical fitness through running, exercise, etc. is required weekly. Uniforms will be issued and are the required wear on weekly inspection days.

NONTRADITIONAL CAREERS IN CTE The term Non-traditional Careers refers to jobs that have been traditionally filled by one gender. The US Department of Labor defines Non-traditional Occupations as occupations for which individuals from one gender comprise less than 25% of the individuals employed in each such occupation. When deciding on a career path it's a good idea to consider all of your options. So don't limit your career options just because you think the job you want is meant for a person of a specific gender. Men and women often have preconceived notions of what is women's work and what is men's work. Few jobs have requirements that effectively limit employment to only men or women. One option many people overlook in their job search is non-traditional employment. Traditionally, career choice is significantly influenced by tradition and the way we have been socialized; therefore, men and women are often unaware of the variety of alternatives that are available to them. The purpose of identifying non-traditional options is to foster interest in and access to these careers with the goal of opening up these professions to the under-represented gender.
