Message from the Faculty Leader Dear Students, Join me this summer in France as we explore the politics, policies and shared political philosophy of the United States, France and the European Union. This program offers you the opportunity to live and study at the renowned University of Strasbourg, founded in 1538. Students will have private accommodations at the historic Gallia Residence and attend classes in the grand Palais Univeritaire. As home to the European Parliament, Council of Europe, European Court of Human Rights and other significant European political institutions, the city of Strasbourg offers us access to practitioners of European politics and their institutions. During this program you will learn about French and European politics from both faculty at the university and professionals in the field. Weekend excursions include a day-tip to Paris, visits to medieval villages and a castle, a hike in the Vosges mountains, discovery of French cuisine and a reflective visit to Struthof, a former concentration camp. This academically rigorous course should appeal not only to government and political science majors but also to those who are interested in international affairs, law, history, philosophy, and/or France. Our partner institution, the University of Strasbourg, offers exceptional faculty who will lead discussions on topics ranging from the political thought of the French Revolution to the founding of the European Union. Strasbourg’s location in the Alsace region of France allows us to gain a unique perspective on our studies from a region that straddles two cultures as well as a window into the legacy of WWII that provided the impetus for European integration. The history of the region and its people will inform our study and deepen our understanding of the importance and meaning of European integration. Expect to meet fascinating people, experience amazing lectures, and to participate in invigorating discussions and evening debates in the local “winestubs”, and the annual summer music festival, fête de la musique, for which you will have the day off to enjoy. Bon voyage!
