‘Global March for Lions - Hong Kong’ The Hong Kong Humane Education Coalition (HKHEC) last week launched 4 different initiatives to raise awareness of the issue of canned hunting and how we in Hong Kong, have a role to play in stopping the slaughter. What is canned hunting: Canned hunting is where the target animal is unfairly prevented from escaping the hunter, either by physical constraints (fencing) or by mental constraints (hand reared, habituated to humans). Excessive breeding of lions in captivity is decimating the wild lion populations and continues under the guise of ‘eco-tourism’, ‘conservation’ and ‘population management’.

The HKHEC encourages everyone to be part of the ‘Global March for Lions - Hong Kong’ Protest on the 15th March 2014. On this day, 39 cities in the world (still counting) will join hands together to demand justice for this iconic animal. Cities include London, New York, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Toronto, Vancouver, Sydney, Melbourne, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Brussels, Cape Town, Durban, and many more.

The HKHEC is also running 2 competitions (art / essay) and 1 letter writing campaign; open to all school aged students, to protest the canned hunting of lions in Africa. Adults and children can participate in different ways to help raise awareness of this issue and help preserve the wild lion populations in Africa.

Sai Kung Sunday “Farmers” Market

First Event & not to be missed ~ Sunday 2 nd March 12pm - 6pm A commercial venture with a conscience doesn’t sound like something many people would embark upon. Sai Kung resident and market organizer, Greg Hunt, has something to say about that. “There is a whole ‘other’ vibe in Sai Kung. It has a very welcoming feel to it.” Says Greg, who lived on Hong Kong island for six years before joining the exodus to the Northern Territories with Hong Kong Academy, where is children attend and his wife works. “People seem to have time to smell the roses here, rather than simply chasing money and glorifying ‘being busy’. The move to Sai Kung has made a huge positive difference to the Hunt household. We love it here and organizing this market, I guess, is my way of putting down roots and giving back to the community.” The Market has applications to participate from organic farms, artisan food suppliers and makers, varied styles of jeweler, photographers, children’s entertainers, food and beverage vendors, specialist tea suppliers, a bespoke tailor for children and adults, vintners and craft beer vendors, a bespoke shoemaker and even a handmade sausage maker. Greg hopes the market will be a real community event with music, face painting and has a few other surprises up his sleeves He hopes to see phones left in pockets, children playing on the grass & people talking. He says: “Togetherness is something constantly being stripped from communities, this is a chance to reconnect with humans . . . but for a finite amount of time, I’m not completely nuts”. The Market’s emphasis is on quality rather than quantity and Hunt explains they he wants to promote local vendors wherever possible but that should not mean cheating weekly visitors from some of the other wonderful vendors in Hong Kong.

Others have tried to get markets going in Sai Kung before, with mixed results, and have come up against problems of one description or another. The difference with Sai Kung Sunday Market is that Hunt is partnered with a committed and determined partner in Hong Kong Academy (HKA). HKA was founded in 2000 with just 7 pupils. It now has a state of the art facility with over 500 students who are graduating to the top universities in the world. Sai Kung Sunday Market, Hunt explained, is proud to be partnered with an establishment so committed to diversity, sustainability and with a real drive to become a pillar of the community. He said, “The Farmers/Craft Market is just one way in which the school is trying to give back to the community that has been so welcoming not just to the school but to its student and parent communities”.
