Buddy at the beach Sai Kung & Clearwater Bay is a lovely area to be on a nice sunny day. But we all start to feel the heat at this time of the year! For a dog getting too hot and suffering heat stroke can be an emergency equal to being hit by a car or bitten by a snake. Unfortunately heat stroke is also common as well as very serious. With a bit of understanding you can help deal with heat stroke or (better still) prevent this from happening to your canine friend. Dogs don’t sweat much, so they rely on panting to cool down. This doesn’t work so well when it's hot and humid. The risk is increased for a short nosed breed (e.g. Pug or Bulldog), dogs with a thick coat or dogs with heart/respiratory disease.

A normal dogs temperature will be less than 39°C, with heat stroke the rectal temperature will be 40° to 43°C (104° to 110°F). But to find out your dog has heat stroke you don’t need a thermometer, or the courage to try taking their temperature... If your dog begins to overheat you should notice heavy panting and difficulty breathing. If you’re not catching the early signs they may have thick saliva and lots of secretions. Often the dog will start vomiting either food or these secretions and saliva. Then the dog may have trouble walking .... If you ignore all the warning signs your dog might progress to collapse, seizures, coma and death.

Heat stroke can range from a mild problem to a severe life threatening problem, so your response will need to be appropriate. But the sooner you begin to cool the dog the better their chances of recovering. Move the dog out of the heat, either an air-conditioned building or a shaded area. Gently spray the dog with water or slowly tip a bottle of water all over the body. Don’t use ice cold water just cool water. An electric fan or air conditioner directed on the dog will also help. If your dog is conscious and alert you can give small amounts of water to drink. For dogs that are vomiting or very weak do not give any water. Monitoring the rectal temperature is the best way to know if things are improving and to allow us to know when to stop the cooling process. Once the temperature is back to normal (39°C or 103°F) it's time to stop, so the dog doesn’t develop hypothermia and shock. If you are close to a vet clinic or hospital they will have experience dealing with heat stroke and have additional life saving measures such as intravenous fluids and oxygen. Following an episode of heat stroke, please take your dog to once of the excellent veterinary clinics or hospitals in our area. There are many possible complications even in a dog that has been cooled down and seems to have recovered - including damage to the kidneys, intestine and heart. Unfortunately every year vets in our Sai Kung & Clearwater Bay area see several heat stroke cases and not all will survive. Now before you get too worried to take your dog on their much loved walk, think of a few preventative measures:

- Avoid too much exercise, especially on the hottest days or at the hottest times of the day. - Regular shorter walks will get them fit and keep them that way.

- If your pet is overweight, help them lose weight BEFORE taking them on LONG walks. - Consider a short haircut for summer, with the emphasis on practical rather than fashionable. - Stop every 10-20 minutes to allow your dog to catch their breath and slow their breathing. - Stick to the shade and avoid hot concrete or asphalt surfaces.

- Bring along a dish and plenty of fresh water ... if they won’t drink encourage them to dip their paws.

- Swimming or playing in the water is safer ... as long as your dog enjoys the water as much as we all enjoy the sunshine !

Sai Kung Clean Shores Summer is here and we all want to go out and enjoy the water & the beaches, but we may be very disappointed. Many of our beaches are covered with litter that has been washed up by the tide or left behind by careless beach-goers. Friends of Sai Kung have launched an appeal to all of us the help CLEAN our SAI KUNG SHORES. Kyak & Hike and Blue Sky Sports Club have already been active in helping to organize events, but we need everyone to help. If you can join a beach clean up or can help to get volunteers to a beach by boat, let us know
