PURPOSE: The UHMC Library offers access to new technologies such as 3D printers to help the UHMC students to bring creations to life. The Maui College Library’s 3D printer is available to Maui College students, faculty and staff to make three­dimensional objects in plastic using a design that is uploaded from a digital computer file. POLICY: The library's 3D printer may only be used for lawful purposes. No one is permitted to create material that is: ● In violation of copyright laws or UH, state, or federal guidelines. ● Unsafe, harmful, dangerous, or poses an immediate threat to the well­being of others. ● Obscene or otherwise inappropriate for the library environment, such as objects of an inappropriate sexual nature, weapons, or drug paraphernalia. ● In violation of another's intellectual property rights. For example, you cannot reproduce material subject to copyright, patent, or trademark protection. ● The library reserves the right to refuse any 3D print request. ● The library cannot guarantee model quality or stability, nor confidentiality of designs. Removing rafts and supports from the model is the responsibility of the user. ● Patrons picking up their items must present their valid UH ID card. Items that are not picked up within 30 days of notification become the property of UHMC Library. ● Only designated library employees will have hands­on access to the 3D printer. ● The 3D printing queue is prioritized on a first­come, first­served basis. Notice concerning copyright and other intellectual property restrictions  ● The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.

● Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specific conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. ● This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright or other intellectual property laws. III.

PROCEDURE: The procedure for printing from the Library’s 3D printers is as follows: Step 1: Find or Create a 3D Model ● Use a 3D Model database to find a model you like. Or, use free 3D Modeling software to create your own original model. Step 2: Make sure your model is printable  ● The file must be in STL format. The model must be smaller than 5.5" (139 mm) in each dimension. The model must be supported. The model must not violate copyright laws or UH, state, or federal guidelines. Step 3: Submit your request ­ ​Go to: ​https://goo.gl/DCc3X1 ​to fill out our online print request form and submit your file online, or you can save your file to a flashdrive, and  bring it to the Circulation Desk in person. 

● We will analyze your model and email you with the cost and an estimated pick up date. When you receive your cost and time estimate, you will need to pay for your model at the Circulation Desk, before it can be printed. ● You will receive an email when your model is ready to be picked up. Please note that procedures governing the use of the library's 3D printer are subject to  change. 



UH Maui College Library ­ 3D Printing Guidelines  Revised 7/2017 Cost of 3D printing  ● Fees for 3D printing are based on a cost­recovery system. Costs are determined by the amount of filament and other materials used during the printing process. ● The cost to print is 10¢ per gram based on the total printed weight of the object. Jobs estimated to take longer than 6 hours will not be accepted. ● You will be emailed the cost to print your model, which must be paid for by cash or check at the Circulation Counter before printing begins.

IV.

TERMS OF SERVICE ○ UHMC Library cannot guarantee model quality or stability, confidentiality of designs, or specific delivery times. Refunds and reprints will only be available in the event of machine malfunction. ○ Refunds will not be issued for objects that do not print correctly due to design errors, therefore we recommended that you utilize software such as Netfabb or Meshlab to check for errors in your STL file prior to submitting it for printing.
