3M Student-Faculty Collaborative Research, Small-Scale Grant Guidelines & Application Instructions I.
Overview
The 3M Small Scale Student-Faculty Collaborative Research Grants supports faculty and students who collaborate in conducting original research projects based on mutual interests in science/technology. (Note: For the purposes of this grant, only Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics are included in the STEM designation.) Currently, there are five (5) 3M Small-Scale Grants awarded per year. Deadlines: Fall Round: October 1 (Project timeline: November 1-May 31)
Spring Round: April 1 (Project timeline: June 1-May 31)
Eligibility: All St. Catherine University faculty members are eligible to apply. Priority will be given to faculty who have not received an APDC grant within the past two years. Priority will be given to ranked faculty. Incomplete or late proposals will be given lower priority and may not be considered.
Proposal Preparation and Submission
Submit by deadline via online application portal on the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs website: • 3M Small Applications at www.stkate.edu/orsp.
Applicants will be notified of the status of their application approximately three weeks after the submission deadline.
Proposal Components (to be submitted with the online application): • Abstract (less than 1 page) o Please use language that would make sense to an intelligent, educated person who is not in your field. The abstract should include the project’s objective/purpose, background of the problem, methodology, and rationale. • • •
Review of Literature and Statement of the Problem (1 page) o This should be analogous to what would appear in a peer-reviewed journal.
Materials, Methods, and/or Experimental Design o If applicable, please address information about human/animal subjects, IRB status, and hazardous materials. Evaluation and Plans for Dissemination

List what plans you have for disseminating your results, for example a website, poster presentation at a conference, conference paper, or journal submission. You will be required to participate in the on-campus poster session, Sr. Seraphim Gibbons Undergraduate Symposium, held annually in May.
Personal Statements o Faculty members and students should explain their individual interest in the research project/subject and their individual qualifications for conducting the research.

Budget

Please use the template included in the PI Toolkit. This should include a budget narrative, indicating the extent of the student’s involvement in the research process. This will be important in the evaluation of the proposal. View the Internal Grants Faculty Compensation Policy

Final Report

The Final Report must be submitted six weeks after completion of the project. It should make sense to an intelligent, educated person who is not necessarily in your field. Please include: • Cover page and budget summary (see final report template); Restatement of the problem; Summary of activities; Findings and future actions; Personal statement from faculty member and student about the experience; and poster presentation at the Sr. Seraphim Gibbons Undergraduate Symposium to celebrate scholarship and collaborative research • View final report form here: https://fs18.formsite.com/orsp/form11/index.html
