Nau mai, hoki mai Dear Parents,

some items, first encourage your child to make the effort to look for it.

Last week we welcomed Monique Hillier to school. Monique joins big sister Maddie at Loburn. I know how much Monique enjoys school already. We also welcome Anna-Marie Roberts to the staff. Anna-Marie is working as a teacher aide in Team East and Team North.

Last week I attended the second meeting of the teachers involved in the Puketeraki Community of Learning (CoL). We now have 33 teachers operating as “Within School” teachers, across the 17 schools. Lynette Sutherland from Loburn is in this group, along with 11 teachers from the high school. Discussion topics have included transitions, relationships, collaboration, assessment, relevance, technology and engagement of students. What all the teachers have found is that they all face similar challenges and barriers, but it is the decisions around these that provide the unique opportunities for all of the schools and their students. Our CoL has 4 achievement challenges 1. Raise literacy achievement of all the students with particular emphasis on boys writing Years 1-8 and accelerating the achievement of reading for students after 1 year at school. 2. Raise achievement of Maori students across Puketeraki, with particular emphasis on writing in years 1-8 and at NCEA level. 3. Raise mathematics achievement of all all the students with particular emphasis on years 6 -10. 4. Raise student achievement in NCEA with particular emphasis on student leavers at NCEA Level 2 and 3, and boys achievement at Level 3.

I listened with hope and optimism around the new government service that replaces Child, Youth and Family. Oranga Tamariki Ministry for Vulnerable Children opened last week and with it, an expectation that all children will be cared for, will be safe and be given the life opportunities that they deserve. Children don’t have a choice of the environment they are brought into and consequently many never get the chance to live a life like our children. I have always wondered why agencies like Plunket were run into the ground through lack of funding, when really they should be funded to the maximum to ensure not just the children succeeded, but parents were given the skills to be great parents. Providing support at the bottom of the cliff is both reactive and costly and never solves any of the problems. Providing funding, time and resources at the earliest possible opportunity will eventually make the difference and turn our disgraceful child abuse statistics around. Supporting children is everyones responsibility. They are our future. With the wet weather comes colds and flu. Please ensure that your children are appropriately prepared for school each day. Gumboots are a good option for outside and a pair of warm indoor shoes are a great idea. Fancy boots or shoes are not appropriate. We have a large number of named and unnamed clothing items that have been left at school. If you think you are missing

Mt Thomas Forest School Trip Friday 5 May As many of you know, each year we take the school to the foothills of North Canterbury. This year we are planning a trip to Mt Thomas. There are some great walks that take you through native tawhai / beech and podocarp forest and can accommodate the different levels of the school. Below are the details of the walks. We would love to have as many parents as we can join us for this outing. If you can help please fill out the form below and return to school by Monday 10 April The three walks are as follows: ( A map of the area is on the following page) Group 1. New Entrant to Year 2: Up Red Pine track to the Kereru Track, and down Wooded Gully. Approximate time 1.5 hours. This group will only need to carry a light morning tea and a drink. Lunch will be in the picnic area. Group 2. Year 3 to Year 5: Up Wooded Gully Track to Red Pine, then down Red Pine before joining up to Wooded Gully. Approximate time 3 hours. This group will need to carry morning tea and lunch. Group 3. Year 6 to Year 8: Up Wooded Gully to Saddle, across to the summit of Mt Thomas, down the Summit Track. Approximate time 5 hours. This group will be carrying morning tea and lunch as well suitable clothing allowing for changes in the weather. All students should be prepared for changeable weather conditions. Thermals / poly pro clothing, raincoat are necessary as well as suitable footwear. The three groups will be treated as three separate groups with each having their own transport and parent help for the day. Group 1 and 2 will leave school around 10.30am, starting their walks at 11am. Returning back to school around 2.30pm. Group 3 will leave around 8.30am returning around 3pm. Depending on the availability of parent transport we may or may not use the school bus. If you feel that your child is not able to complete his / her walk please let us know below so we can accommodate them. Conversely if you feel your child could move up a group, fill out the box below. All students are expected to participate. The times are very approximate and they are allowing for several stops along the way. Some students will find the walks challenging. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
