Purpose: To identify patients who are positive for Group B Streptococcus during pregnancy to ensure appropriate treatment and better outcome for mother and baby. Policy:. To screen maternity patients for Group B Streptococcus(GBS) in order to ensure appropriate treatment if positive results as well as provide education to expectant mother according to following procedure. Procedure: 1. Urine culture that includes screening for GBS will be done at initial visit and repeated if needed. 2. Lead nurse for maternity will refer to attending physician for treatment recommendations. 3. If patient’s test is positive for Group B Strep( GBS) the chart will be flagged with a red stamp. 4. The results will be discussed with the patient and the pamphlet “Awareness of Group B Strep Infection During Pregnancy” will be given. 5. Treatment for positive GBS during labor and delivery will be determined by the attending physician delivering and physician responsible for the baby. 6. Hospital of delivery will be notified as soon as possible of any positive Group B Strep results, followed by a copy of the patient’s record with lab results included. 7. Each patient will be asked to sign a release of information for hospital of delivery to obtain a summary of labor and delivery including all medications given and treatment for Group B Strep. 8. Appalachian District will collaborate with local obstetricians and pediatricians, local hospital staff, and tertiary care center staff to ensure appropriate treatment and a better outcome for mother and baby.
