How to use BonJournal:
1. Download the BonJournal App (it’s free!) 2. Name and put a cover photo on your BonJournal 3. Start posting your experience reflections! You can view the how to’s directly from the BonJournal Website https://bonjourn.al/blog/3-faq-bonjournal-basics When designing your BonJournal, please think about the layout and colors. It needs to be easy to read and not too cluttered. Also, remember that you must use license free images on your site, if you’re not using your own pictures. To use another’s pictures is copyright infringement! *To find free images, on a computer, do an image search. Then under advanced options, click on license and select “free to share and use”.
Introduction: In your first Bonjournal entry, tell me about yourself, in Latin. What are your likes, dislikes, sports you play, interesting info about you or your family etc. You should include a picture of yourself. Do not post any personal information like your last name, phone number etc. How you organize this section is up to you. Do you want one big section or some subsections? ● Name ● Interesting Information about you ● Hobbies ● Pictures Over the summer, your job will be to document six experiences in your Bonjournal. Select SIX of the following activities to complete. You will write about each one in your blog and include a picture or link to a video that you have made. After you do the activity, write a short description IN Latin or English describing: 1. what you did- be sure to support with pictures, links etc. 2. what you learned 3. what you liked about the activity 4. what you understood and what you had difficulty with. Your description should be more than three sentences! Give me details. If you listened to Pandora, what songs did you like? Who were they by? If you read, what did you read… where did you find it? Etc. Be sure to include pictures! Blog Experience Options/Suggestions 1. You know the basics of where Latin came from, and the languages that came from it. Use the internet to do some research about the Latin language. How did it come to be? Where do experts think the Roman alphabet came from? Write a summary (in English) of what you found out. 2. Watch a movie about ancient Rome (or ancient Greece) and write a short summary. Make sure you have your parents' permission if it is rated more mature than PG! 3. Go to an Italian restaurant, and order something that the ancient Romans might have eaten (no tomatoes, no pasta) and using your phone, or camera, record the meal/food/ decorations with your commentary.
4. Choose a Latin-speaking place (in the ancient Roman Empire) that you would like to visit (if you could time travel). Find a hotel, what type of activities you could do there, and what you could see there. 5. Find an ancient Roman recipe. Make it for your family. Take videos of you making the food. 6. Paint or draw a picture of a scene from Roman history or from a Greek/Roman Myth. Include a summary of the story and a photo of your artwork. 7. Travel! Any travel related to Latin class is great! Travel to Europe will give you lots of opportunities to see Latin, but even travel anywhere in America will yield examples of Latin! 8. Do you know what "Lorem Ipsum" is? Do a little research and explain it in your own words. Include a couple of images showing what it looks like. 9. Make and decorate a page of illuminated manuscript in Latin, using a calligraphy pen and an actual piece of paper. There are inexpensive pens to be had, and lots of instructions online or in the art section of a book store. Take a picture of your work and post it in your blog, with a reflection (in English) of the experience. 10. Explore YouTube for examples of spoken Latin. Write a summary about what you heard, including a link to one YouTube that you watched. 11. Using post-it notes, post-it 10 Latin words for items in your house that you don’t know the word for and leave them there for a week, then record a video of you reciting them from memory. 12. Listen to the Finnish radio broadcast, called Nuntii Latini, http://areena.yle.fi/1-1931339 which gives updates on current events in Latin. Pre-read the announcement, then listen to the news as you read along. Write a summary (in English) of the news, and comment on your experience. 13. Read a book in Latin for 10 minutes. You can find several in a bookstore or from an on-line bookseller, such as Harry Potter, Cat in the Hat, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Winnie-the-Pooh, and many more! Write a blog reflection of that experience.
14. Read a familiar chapter of the Bible in Latin. On this website: Blue Letter Bible you can change the version to VUL (the Latin Vulgate, translated by Jerome in 405 AD) and choose which chapter you would like to read. Blog about the parts you thought were easy or difficult. 15. Do you have a Twitter account? Search for and follow the Pope's Latin tweets, which are posted about once a week or so. Comment on a couple of his tweets, and explain what they are about. 16. Vicipaedia is the Latin edition of Wikipedia. Play around on it for a few minutes to see how it works. Find an article that interests you there and read it. Write about what you learned. 17. Visit the free National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and find 5 examples of either A) paintings with Greek/Roman mythological subject OR B) paintings or artifacts from the period of the early Church, most of which include Latin. Take a non-flash picture of the 5 that you find (check to make sure you are allowed to do so) and write a reflection on your favorite one. If you are visiting another town, you might find an alternate museum. 18. Latin is the language used for scientific nomenclature, which is how plants and animals are classified in scientific research and literature. Find out what the Latin nomenclature is (from kingdom all the way down to species) for 4 different living things and include a picture in your blog. 19. Write a poem or a song in Latin, and post it on your blog. 20. Attend a Latin mass and follow along in the bulletin. Include a picture of you with your family in front of the parish, and a video or recording of you reading some of the Latin prayers (AFTER the service). 21. Compile a list of 30 Latin words involving the profession you hope to have. Create a Quizlet set with these words. Post the link for Quizlet in your blog. At the end of the week, have a family member quiz you. Post pictures or videos of you being quizzed by your family member. Have another idea/suggestion? That’s great! Please email me for approval before completing it!
