7th Grade Character Day Friday, October 30th You will be researching a historical figure from the 7th grade social studies curriculum and presenting a speech about your chosen “character.” The requirements for this activity are: 1. Select a historical figure from the attached list of historical figures within the 7th grade curriculum (First Americans‐Civil War era). 2. Return this sheet with your three top choices and a parent signature by Thursday, October 8th. You must have a signed sheet BEFORE you can sign up for a historical figure. 3. On Thursday, October 8th and Friday, October 9th you will be able to sign up for your historical figure in room 222. Sign‐ups are first come, first serve. 4. In Social Studies and in English you will research your historic person to learn more about his / her life and accomplishments and fill in the questions in this packet. 5. Come to school dressed in character. 6. Do a 60‐90 second presentation on how your character made a significant impact on history. You should become your character during the presentation. 7. Memorize your oral presentation – It is recommended that you write your speech on a 3x5 card. You can have the card with you at the event as a last resort. Take the costume and presentation into account when choosing your historical figure. You should not be spending money on your costume. You should not plan on renting an outfit for the day. Creativity counts, so you should look around your house to determine what you can use for your costume. Historic Person: 1st Choice: __________________________________________________________________________ 2nd Choice: __________________________________________________________________________ 3rd Choice: __________________________________________________________________________ Parent / Guardian Signature: ___________________________________________________________ Parents are invited to watch their child’s presentation. As the order of the presentations is based on the historical time period of the character chosen, we will not know when your child will be presenting until sign‐ups are over. Once the list has been established, it will be posted on the team website as well as on Mrs. Gray’s class website and Mrs. Young’s class website so you may plan accordingly.

Point of View: Stay in first person and in past tense. Pretend you are your character.
Organization: Tell about your person’s life in chronological order. End with his/her legacy (see outline). Use transitions so different sections flow together.
Development: Include important facts/ info only. Include info about all categories in outline if it applies to you. Explain events fully, so readers don’t have questions. Language Use: Make sure research is in your own words and is easy to understand. Use formal language.
Speaking Skills: You do NOT need to have speech memorized, but it should be rehearsed. Speak clearly and slowly Make sure all the words are comfortable to you and you know how to pronounce them Look up at your audience throughout the speech (at least once every 10 seconds)—You can mark spots in your speech where it makes sense to look up. Don’t just glance up—look around the room WHILE you continue giving your speech. Use emotion/ emphasis when you speak.
