7th Grade Character Day  Friday, October 30th   You will be researching a historical figure from the 7th grade social studies curriculum and presenting a speech  about your chosen “character.”    The requirements for this activity are:    1. Select a historical figure from the attached list of historical figures within the 7th grade curriculum (First  Americans‐Civil War era).      2. Return this sheet with your three top choices and a parent signature by Thursday, October 8th.  You must have  a signed sheet BEFORE you can sign up for a historical figure.      3. On Thursday, October 8th and Friday, October 9th you will be able to sign up for your historical figure in room  222.  Sign‐ups are first come, first serve.      4. In Social Studies and in English you will research your historic person to learn more about his / her life and  accomplishments and fill in the questions in this packet.    5. Come to school dressed in character.    6. Do a 60‐90 second presentation on how your character made a significant impact on history.  You should  become your character during the presentation.    7. Comments

Point of View:  Stay in first person and in  past tense.  Pretend you are your  character. 

 

Organization:  Tell about your person’s  life in chronological order.  End with  his/her legacy  (see outline).  Use  transitions so different sections flow  together. 

 

Development:  Include important facts/  info only.  Include info about all  categories in outline if it applies to you.   Explain events fully, so readers don’t  have questions.  Language Use:  Make sure research is in  your own words and is easy to  understand.  Use formal language. 

 

Speaking Skills:  You do NOT need to  have speech memorized, but it should be  rehearsed.     Speak clearly and slowly   Make sure all the words are  comfortable to you and you  know how to pronounce them   Look up at your audience  throughout the speech (at least  once every 10 seconds)—You  can mark spots in your speech  where it makes sense to look up.   Don’t just glance up—look  around the room WHILE you  continue giving your speech.   Use emotion/ emphasis when  you speak.
