When the late Canon Duncan Stone, as a young priest in the 1940’s, visited a parish in the Highlands, he was struck often to find thirty or forty people kneeling there in silent prayer. Now often there is talking up to the very beginning of Mass, and it starts again immediately afterwards. But what is a church for, and why do we go there? We go to meet the Lord and the
Please pray for a new Bishop of Nottingham: O God, eternal Shepherd, who govern your flock with unfailing care, grant in your boundless fatherly love a pastor for your Church in Nottingham who will please you by his holiness and to us show watchful care. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
Lord comes to meet us. “The Lord is in his holy temple. Let all the earth keep silence before him!” said the prophet Habakkuk. Surely the silent sacramental presence of the Lord in the tabernacle should lead us to silence? We need to focus ourselves and put aside distractions before the Mass begins. We need to prepare to hear the word of the Lord in the readings and homily. Surely we need a quiet mind to connect to the great Eucharistic Pray-
er? And when we receive Holy Communion, surely we want to listen to what the Lord God has to say, “the voice that speaks of peace”? Being together in this way can make us one — the Body of Christ — quite as effectively as words. Bishop Hugh Gilbert OSB I am indebted to Deacon Andrew for drawing this to my attention by posting it on Facebook.
The Ashby Foodbank: Donat io ns of dried/canned items can be pu t in the foodbank b ox at the back of the church. They are dropped off at the foodbank depot on a regular basis. If you would like to know more or get involved please visit ashbyfoodbank.org.uk, contact The Ashby Food Bank at the Holy Trinity Parish Office, or speak to Jane Desjardins at church. We have received a letter in acknowledgement for our donations to the Foodbank. This is displayed on the noticeboard, and I have also posted it on ololstcharles.blogspot.co.uk Invitation to pray the Rosary: On Tuesday after the 9.30am Mass (about 10am) we pray the Rosary for priests and on Friday after the 9.30am Mass we pray the Rosary for peace. Please join us. St Charles Catholic Pre-School: To donate £2 to wards the fundrais ing to rep lace our Pre-School PLEASE TEXT SCPS13 £2 TO 70070. Faith In Families: (Prev ious ly the Catho lic Ch ild ren’s Society): You can bring your boxes in as and when you like and leave them in the safe or at the back of church. I will then collect them when I am at church and return them to the back of church once they are empty. If anybody would like to have a box at home then please contact me (Amy Fearn 01283 210445) See noticeboard and ololstcharles.blogspot.co.uk for special appeals from Faith in Families. (Very!) Hope into Action is a Ch rist ian charit y set up to enab le ch urches to house the h omeless. There is an opportunity for the charity to open a house in Ashby. What is needed from our churches is volunteers to commit to forming a friendship and support group, which will be fully trained by and have the support of the charity. Please pray for this project and encourage anyone you know who has a heart for the homeless to get involved. For more details please see http://ololstcharles.blogspot.co.uk/ The Children’s Christmas Party for th ose up to and inc lud ing Year 6, is th is Sunday 14th December at St Charles 3–5pm. Poor and Needy Parishes: Secon d Co llect ion th is weekend. Christmas Cards: Th is year we are go ing f or a s imp le card with Christmas Mass t imes, regu lar week end Mass times, and contact details. It will not be distributed by addressed envelopes, many of which ended up being posted at considerable cost to the parish. Instead, it will be distributed to some of the new estates in the parish. There are also some at the back of Church for you to take and pop through the doors of friends/relatives/neighbours who might appreciate it. Perhaps you know someone who used to come to Mass.... We need to be looking outward, as Pope Francis constantly reminds us. Suggestion from a parishioner: If you feel, as many peop le do, that send ing Christmas Cards to parishioners who you see each week at Mass is a waste of a tree, then it has been suggested that you write one card and place it on the ribbon that will be along the notice board at the side of church and put the money saved in the box for CAFOD. Yearbook: The 2015 Diocesan Yearbook is av ailab le at the back of bot h Chu rches, price £3. It’s a useful source of information on our diocese — strongly recommended. Mothers’ Prayers: Our next meet ing will take p lace th is Monday 15th December at 7.30pm in the Chu rch. All ladies are most welcome to come and join us as we pray for our children and all children throughout the world. Seasonal refreshments will be served afterwards. Thursday Mass will no w be at 9.30am as its regu lar t ime. On the occas ions we hav e had to mov e it to the morning, more people come than in the evening — and all the evening regulars seem to be able to make the morning time. If this creates any problems, please let me know and I will think again. Cleaning and Decorating for Christmas: Christ mas Churc h clean in g/decorat ing will take p lace on Monday, 22nd December at 10.a.m. Everyone welcome to join in! Christmas in our Parishes Christmas Ev e, 6pm at Ashb y and 9.30pm in Measham. Mass at Mid n ight preceded by carols, and at 10am on Christmas Day, both in Ashby. It is the custom at the 6pm Mass for the children to prepare cards and gifts to present to Jesus on his birthday. The gifts are later passed on to children who will have few or no gifts of their own. Gifts should be marked with suitability for boy or girl and approximate age. Nothing perishable, please. The 6pm is usually very full indeed. You are much more likely to find a seat at Midnight or 10am. Ebola: CAFOD inv ites all parishes and commun it ies across Eng land and Wales to ho ld those affected by the Ebola crisis in their prayers on the weekend of 13/14 December. Much more at ololstcharles.blogspot.co.uk Refreshments: Coffee and tea are available in the crypt after the 10am Sunday Mass and the 9.30am Mass on Wednesdays at Ashby, and after the Saturday evening Mass at Measham on the first Saturday of each month. Please stay for a chat and an opportunity to meet fellow parishioners and visitors alike. New parishioners: If you have recently moved into our parish please put your name, address & contact details in the book on the table near the piety stall at the back of church or email Fr Colin:
