ADVENTURES WITH DAISY

BID FOR 2015-2016 RESIDENCE HALL ASSOCIATION: VP of PROGRAMMING DAISY MAY SAEPHAN

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Greetings Yall! My name is Daisy May Saephan and I am running for the 2015-2016 Vice President of Programming for the Residential Hall Association. For those who do not know me, I am a first year majoring in Biological Sciences here at San Jose State University. I enjoy planning events, meeting new people and impacting others. Already being part of RHA as President of Joe West Hall, it is an addition to my “one of the best things I have ever experienced in my entire life” list. I want to continue to be affiliated with the Residence Hall Association but for the next upcoming year as VP of Programming because this organization has given me the greatest opportunities to work with a team to build a community and grow unity to the diverse group of students who are living on campus. My previous involvement throughout high school has prepared me even more for my interests in involvement in college. I went back and forth as President and Vice President for all of my four years being in the student government at my high school, known as ASB (Associated Student Body). I was also President of a non-profit organization called Friday Night Live which spreads awareness to prevent underage use of drugs and getting behind the wheel while intoxicated. My high school lacked clubs, so during my freshman year, I created a dance team of about 10 people and called it “Impromptu.” We performed at the school’s talent show and rallies. Not only that these lead roles helped me gain leadership skills, confidence and friends, it also helped me think more critically and creatively by planning events to fundraise, events for our school in general and taught me how to take risks. I was never allowed to take a Leadership class because that elective would affect my AVID (Advance Via Individual Determination) class which helped prep me for college. With that being my challenge, I took the initiative and still offered to help the Leadership class plan rallies, homecoming, prom, and other school festivities. My prior knowledge of leadership skills, event planning, and being a good role model has brought me to a bigger opportunity, here at SJSU. I have a better understanding of the importance of pursuing higher education and wanting to give back to the community due to my UNVS 95 and EDCO 4 classes, which I took during first semester, as well as the Southeast Asian Youth Conferences. Currently as a college student, I am President of Joe West Hall and I work and collaborate with a team who I can call family. Joseph, Marisol, Dana, Elexis, Avnish and Yadi are my truly lifelong friends’ I will forever hold with me wherever I go. My Advisor Diana, the Liaisons, Eric and Lantz, and RHA Liaison, Tiffany, are the ones who I look up to, and make me thankful for the leadership role I am in. I am a team player who help contribute everyone’s ideas and make it work as one. My desire of this position of taking initiative, creating positive energy, and wanting to help others is the style of work I have a passion for. I am a risk taker and willing to take risks to see where it takes me and my team. I am confident that I will represent the Residence Hall Association as VP of Programming as a valuable team member. I look forward to being your VP of Programming for the 2015-2016 academic school year. Sincerely, Daisy May Saephan

Community Service Volunteer, Southeast Asian Student Coalition Summer Institute (SASC SI), Berkeley, CA

[June 2013]

I helped set up, clean up, and cook lunch and dinner for five days and four nights. I got the opportunity to tour the mentees around the UC Berkeley Campus and build relationships. This volunteering experience helped me gain more knowledge about becoming open-minded, taking care of responsibilities, time management, as well as a glimpse of college life. Volunteer, Watt Gerber, Watt Elverta, Watt Rio Linda, Sacramento, CA Before, I was told to help my aunts’ work their vendor at the Laotian/Thai temples during Lao New Year. I did not have a significant purpose for helping them work, not until after my experience with the Southeast Asian Student Coalition Summer Institute when I was a mentee in 2012 –which I found a purpose. I do not know all the true historical events within my culture, but volunteering at the temple brings me closer to my roots, which I am proud to identify myself as Laotian and Mien American.
