Our Application Process 1) Meet the basic requirements  18 years or older  Valid CA drivers license  Live in Alameda County or a contiguous county 2) Attend an orientation 3) Complete an Application (January 1st – January 31st) 4) Pass a basic physical agility test (March) 5) Pass oral interviews (April) 6) Pass a preliminary background check

7) Begin Basic Training Class (May through July) 8) Complete a thorough background check It is desirable that medical requirements below are completed before the completion of our Basic Class Medical Requirements: (1) CPR for the Professional Rescuer (CPR/FPR) (2) First Responder, Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) NHTSA Certified, or Wilderness First Responder Wilderness First Responder classes MUST also provide a First Responder certificate.

Alameda County Search and Rescue is a team of dedicated unpaid professionals who serve the county of Alameda and respond to mutual aid requests from other counties throughout California. Search & Rescue is an unpaid job, and we are unpaid professionals. SAR requires a huge training commitment and dedication to respond 24 hours a day. It often means phone calls and pages in the middle of the night to respond to emergencies. Our membership consists of 70+ members, with experience ranging from first-time searchers to 35 year veterans. About a quarter of our members are K9 handlers who have “mission ready” search dogs certified in trailing, area, water, and cadaver search. All of our members are required to meet the National SARTECH II standard. The team trains most Thursday nights in Dublin and an occasional weekend. New recruits attend our Basic Training Class that begins in May. During the Basic Training Class, attendance is mandatory for every class. Classes meet on Thursday evenings from 7pm-10pm and a weekend. As a general member, you must participate at least six hours per month through training, searches, or public relations events. Some of the skills you will learn in the Basic Training Class include: search techniques, survival skills, map and compass, patient packaging and transport, technical rescue, knots, lighting and generators, tracking, and more. But the training in the Basic Class is just the tip of the iceberg!
