FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Alden Projects™ announces the opening of a new ground floor gallery space at 34 Orchard Street (between Canal and Hester Streets), opening September 10, 2015 from 6:00 – 9:00. Alden Projects’ inaugural exhibition “Double Standard: Ed Ruscha and Mason Williams 1956-1971” is staged in two parts, and focuses on collaborations, dialogues, and work for hire between Ed Ruscha and Mason Williams (artist, musician, writer, and Ruscha’s friend from Oklahoma since fourth grade). Although surprisingly unknown to most of Ruscha’s current audience (and even to his historiographers), Mason Williams occupied a unique vantage and a literal seat in the car in the artist’s important early development all the way through the 1960s, when their early dialogues as nomadic friends, roommates, and fellow artists in Los Angeles often spilled over in meaningful creative, multi-disciplinary experiments in both artists’ work (collectively and independently). “Double Standard: Ed Ruscha & Mason Williams 1956-1971” (Part One) runs from September 10 – October 18, 2015. “Double Standard: Ed Ruscha & Mason Williams Work for Hire” (Part Two) continues without interruption through November 18, 2015. Founded by Todd Alden in 2011, Alden Projects™ proposes a different kind of commercial gallery model: it is an exhibition, research, and publishing enterprise dedicated to presenting compelling contemporary art along side recent, historical art and its supplements. Our focus: other narratives for other rooms. Alden Projects™ has been an exhibiting member of New Art Dealers Alliance since 2011. Among other things, Todd Alden is an art historian and author of books and numerous critical essays on post-war art, including artists’ ephemera, bricolage, Dada, Marcel Broodthaers, Rachel Foullon, Eva Hesse, Lee Lozano, Sonic Youth, and Andy Warhol. The gallery’s third fall exhibition will be “Frank Stella: Artist’s Ephemera from the 1960s”.
