ALGEBRA 1: STRATEGIC SUPPORT COURSE SYLLABUS: 2016-2017 Paso Robles High School Teacher: Mr. Goodin, Room: 801 E-mail: [email protected] Phone: 805-769-1500 ext: 801 Website: https://goo.gl/meQxfJ50

Strategic Support The PRHS Strategic Support course is a formal development of foundational algebraic skills to support the Algebra student. All students in California must pass Algebra 1 before they can receive a diploma of graduation from high school. This course is designed to help support students achieve that goal. This course is designed to ensure students have success their first year in high school so they can continue on with a strong foundation. The PRHS Strategic Support class is a community of students that share the same Math classes; this format helps build a team mentality. The students have a strategic support period during the school day. During this period they will have an opportunity to review past assignments they had difficulty on, prep for future assignments, and develop their Math skills so they are at or above grade level. The course will evolve throughout the year depending on the students’ needs. This class is designed to make sure the student feels comfortable and confident in their Math skills. As part of the curriculum for this class, we will be using a research based computer program called ALEKS. This program will help deliver individualized differentiated instruction to each student. This program has the ability to monitor a student’s progress through the course of the year, and provide data as to how well each student is doing throughout the sections of Algebra 1. I. Teacher Expectations of Students: A. Attendance—Come to class and be on time. All Math interconnects. Missing class breaks up the continuous flow that is essential to the understanding of this subject. Your attendance will affect your grade through class participation points. Many assignments throughout the year will be class participation points that cannot be earned or made up if you are absent. We enforce all school policies regarding tardies and truancies. B. Materials--Students must come to class prepared and ready for work. They must always bring their notebooks, calculator (recommended), binders, pencil, pen, and assignments. The following are a list of materials that are recommended for this course:  1” Binder  Graph Paper  Lined notebook paper  Scientific calculator (highly recommended), bring daily.  Pencils with erasers (two or more), highlighters, markers  Small sharpener  12” Ruler  Two or more red pens C. Classwork—Be appropriate and productive. Make the most of your time. Always write down all notes. If given time in class, get to work quickly and work until end of period. We work bell to bell here. Failure to work in class will result in a loss of participation points. D. Curriculum—The curriculum for each class will cover District and State Standards. 1. Textbook: Algebra 1: A Common Core Curriculum, Big Ideas Math, by Ron Larson, Boswell 2. Online Access: Students will have access to the textbook and materials online as we set up their accounts in class. E. Class Rules

1. Be safe

2. Be respectful

3. Be responsible

4. Show Bearcat P.R.I.D.E.

(Water is Allowed) Remove your hat and/or hood as you enter the classroom. Electronic devices such as cell phones are not to be audible or visible in the classroom. Do not use the electric outlets to charge your phone in class. EXIT – The teacher, not the bell, will dismiss you. Please wait to pack your belongings until the teacher has given permission. II. Grading: Semester grades are based on weighted averages of participation, classwork, and your Algebra 1 class grade. Homework will be assigned on occasion. ***Grades may be viewed on AERIES. If you have trouble logging onto AERIES, please contact the office. III. Intervention: A. Math targeted interventions after school (Mr. Wagner Room 814) 7th period 3-4pm, M-F, Drop-in. B. Teacher office hours by appointment IV. Cell Phones and other electronic devices: Cell Phones are allowed in school, and may occasionally be used in class. HOWEVER, they, along with all other electronic devices, need to be turned off and silent before the beginning of class. Failure to comply with this policy will result in confiscation of the device and turned into the office. Choosing to refuse to turn over the phone will result in a referral and discipline according to our school policy. If anyone is caught with a phone out during a quiz or test, I must assume that you are involved in some form of cheating with the phone. You will automatically receive a zero grade on the quiz or test. V. Office Hours and Teacher Contact: I have an open door policy with students and parents to ensure that positive communication is maintained. For questions regarding any of the material covered in class, I am available, by appointment, before or after school. Call, email, or come see me prior to meeting to verify that I am available to meet with you. Email address: [email protected] Phone: (805) 769-1500 ext. 801 Website: https://goo.gl/meQxfJ

Text message reminders: I encourage all students and parents to sign up to be part of text message reminders. It is a one-way text message that I use to remind students of tests, quizzes, binder checks, or project due dates. Sometimes I will send a text asking you to bring your book to class, correct any mistakes that may be on the calendar, and even send links to copies of worksheets or homework calendars. To join, text the message @WeRss801 to the number 81010 or for email reminders go to rmd.at/werss801 on a desktop computer to sign up.

Every student can pass this course if they work hard, participate in class, complete all of their assignments, and pass all of their tests. Student Information Sheet Please return this page.
