30 Mosques in 30 Days: Tales from an American Ramadan Roadtrip with Aman Ali Aman Ali is an award-winning storyteller in New York City and one of the few young American Muslim voices in the public spotlight today. His animated style of storytelling draws from his upbringing and travels. He has appeared on dozens of media outlets, such as HBO, ABC News, and NPR, to talk about being a 20-something American-born Muslim. He is known as the co-creator of the social media phenomenon 30 Mosques in 30 Days, a 40,000-kilometer road trip to all 50 U.S. states with the mission of telling authentic and compelling stories about Muslims in America. He continues to share his unique perspective about social issues as a regular commentator for CNN. CNN ranked 30 Mosques in 30 Days: Tales from an American Ramadan Roadtrip as one of the top stories of 2010. During the past two Ramadans, Islam's holy month of fasting and reflection, New Yorkers Aman Ali and Bassam Tariq took a roadtrip across America, stopping each evening to break their fasts at a different mosque in a different state. They prayed inside the infamous “Ground Zero Mosque” in Manhattan, got pulled over by a cop in Mississippi, and visited the first mosque ever built in the U.S., in Ross, North Dakota – a town with a population of only 48 people. Along the way they met a Native American Muslim who grew up on a Sioux reservation, mainstream Muslim athletes and rappers, refugees from Cambodia, Bosnia, and Somalia, and many, many others, all of whom are part of the diverse Muslim-American community. Their journey, which was documented on their website, explored what it means to be Muslim in America today.
