Overview: The students will be introduced to the works of Andy Warhol. The students will be paired together to take digital photo headshots of each other that will be used for their self portrait. They will be introduced to editing tools on the computer. They will be introduced to painting on a transparency format to recreate Warhol’s technique.
Objectives: The learner will be able to: Identify the artist Andy Warhol and his works. (VAHP-E4-1-5) Create a self-portrait using Warhol’s technique. (VACE-E4-1) Develop an open mind as to what format a medium can be used with. They will be introduced to technology in the arts. (VA-AP-E4-4) Apply previous knowledge of elements and principles of design to identify design and express/explain opinions of past and present works. (VA-CA-E4-1) Recognize the style of Pop Art and past artists from the era. (VA-HP-E4-6)
Vocabulary Pop Art: An art movement that emerged in the 1950’s; this
art presented a challenge to traditions of fine art by including imagery from popular culture such as advertising, news, etc Silk Screen printing: a print made using a stencil process in which an image or design is superimposed on a very fine mesh screen and printing ink is squeegeed onto the printing surface through the area of the screen that is not covered by the stencil Transparency Paper: material that transmits light so that it is clear, thin, and can be seen through Acrylic Paint: fast-drying paint containing pigment suspension in acrylic polymer emulsion Digital Media: any media that are encoded in a machinereadable format.

After the teacher prints your portrait, choose what colors you will paint for your color scheme
Steps For Our Project: Use acrylic paint to paint the transparency.
Steps For Our Project: Make eyes and teethe “pop” by painting them white and making them look bold
Steps For Our Project: Use the color blocking technique similar to Andy Warhol’s to give the project the appropriate affect
Steps For Our Project: Align black construction paper to the back of the transparency, fully covering the back of the portrait Use colored masking tape as a border of the portrait and to attach the black construction paper to the portrait
