Remember to book your room reservations early because of the small room block guarantee. This can be accomplished by calling the Sheraton Steamboat Resort at 800-848-8877 and ask for the FDA special rates. Prices depend on individual needs; price rate chart located at the bottom of this page. Call right now! Registration is currently available on the website and payable with PayPal. Or, you can fill out the registration form in this Newsletter and pay with a check. Mail the form and a check for the total amount to Stacy at: FDA Central Office, 8850 Lynwood Avenue, Seminole, FL 33772. For those FDA members that have not experienced the annual meeting, you should really try one. Deby and I missed this meeting for about ten years, because I was too cheap to take a week off during the summer, a very lucrative time for oral surgery. But the first time we did make the meeting, the hook was set! It’s a time to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. The CDE is always outstanding and the fellowship is top shelf. I hope you’ll give it a try this year. The flight through the mountains is worth the trip and you’ll have a great time to-boot. If you have any questions about the meeting, routing or whatever, I can be reached at: (W) 254-965-2541, (H) 254-965-8986, © 254-592-1248 Bob Prough

P RES ID EN T’ S M ES S A G E “Who said that aviation is dwindling, we had 21 aircraft and 83 people (both a record) attend the latest “Cayman Caravan” that concluded March 22nd.” Wow! The FDA rocks. Brenda and I have put to bed another outstanding Caribbean Adventure that ranks right up there with a few other mountain top experiences that I have had over the last 20 plus years with this group. There were so many aspects to this adventure but I will highlight a few for us to peruse. • The Flight: The wx was crystal clear, and like clockwork, another plane lifted off every 2 minutes with military precision from Marathon Florida. I de-briefed with the Miami Center specialist in charge of our group and he said we could NOT have done a better job! Cuba was clear as a bell and we saw parts of the world that very few US citizens have seen for the last 60 years Our arrival into Grand Cayman was equally punctual with all planes landing and getting all pax cleared by Customs and Immigration within 1 ½ hrs. We were rewarded by having the Civilian Aviation Authority provide us with Rum Punch and Rum cake as we departed Customs. Nice touch. •The CE: We had a top notch CE with Anthony Savage providing details on a very complicated and unusual case he and his partners tackled in the recent past. The results were lifechanging for the patient. Way to go Anthony! Next was Toshie Rever providing unique insight to the wild economic situation that the USA has been involved with for the last several years and some timely recommendations on how to protect our portfolios. We then had Charlie Monet give us an extremely timely discussion on how keeping proficient will enhance our performance and

how the main ingredient is good decision-making for good outcomes. Last but not least was Ned Markey exposing us to the world in which he lives (both professionally and personally ) Pedodontics. It was fascinating to learn how his Practice is on the cutting edge of this discipline and we all took home some terrific pointers. • The Food: We had scrumptious dining every evening that was mouth watering and always an adventure. Beautiful sunsets abounded as we ate overlooking the Caribbean Sea. A special treat was provided by Master Chef Krista VanWagner (friend of Kevin and Beth D’Angelo) at our FDA Reception Sunday evening. The Marriott would not let her use their kitchen. So she mailed down $400 worth of her secret sauce for our appetizers to be cooked in and what a treat those appetizers were. Thank you Krista! • The Stingrays: Oh my gosh……the stingrays! We filled two boats with FDAers that took us to famed Stingray City. These are stingrays that are in the wild, yep we boated out to a big reef where a hurricane had shifted the sand so that it was about 4 feet deep and for a couple of hrs we got to hold the stingrays, play with them and feed them. Brenda and I had done this before the hurricane when it was 20 feet deep and you needed to Scuba, I was concerned that this would not be as good but, in my opinion, it was better because you could interact with then so much better. Even Ray Rhoades was screaming with delight like a girl.

8850 Lynwood Dr.,Seminole, FL 33772

• The Dolphins: Close to 50 of us did a knock your socks off Dolphin Encounter. We were happily being towed around a big lagoon hanging on to two dolphin dorsal fins, kiss them, hug em, have then roll over and play dead (woops, that’s my dog Baylee) and then for the piece de resistance, we laid flat on the surface, legs straight, feet up and each Dolphin put her nose on the bottom of our feet and pushed us at race neck speed. Out of the water to our thighs, this famous “foot push” was exhilarating. You will just have to see the pictures, awesome. • The Submarine: Did I say Submarine? 70 of us filled two submarines for a 110 foot night dive. Each of us had a 3 foot porthole to look through and there were many floodlights blazing so we got to see the coral, sponges, and other underwater vistas with brilliant color instead of the blue filtered light that you get during the day. Also, completely different types of fish were attracted to our lights, the undersea predators, octopus, and the occasional mermaid. Plus just going on a Submarine made this a red letter day. The spirit of the FDA was vibrant and alive and, as usual, you all were what made this trip special for the Mowery’s! We are already planning next years version of our Caribbean Adventure so stay tuned for upcoming articles. Steve and Brenda

The official airport for this year’s meeting is Bob Adams Field, KSBS, in Steamboat Springs, CO. There are basically three acceptable routes to get to KSBS. From the northeast go to Laramie(KLAR) and follow the power lines to the southwest over Walden(33V) and stay over the power lines all the way into Steamboat Springs(KSBS). This is the lowest route, 12,500 feet ASL, to get you into KSBS. From the southwest you can start at Pueblo(KPUB) following the road all the way to KSBS via: west over Freemont Co (1V6), to Alexander(KANK); turning north over Central Colorado Regional(AEJ); to Lake County KLXV; through Tennessee Pass(10,424’); swing west of Mt Powell(13,600’) going to Mc Elroy(20V) and follow the road north over Rabbit Ears Pass(9,573’) into Steamboat Springs. It is also possible to fly west out of Denver, but you have to deal with the DIA, Class B airspace and climb to 14,500 or higher to clear the mountains. The first two routes can be navigated safely at 12,000 to 13,000 VFR. All IFR MEA’s are about two thousand feet higher.

8850 Lynwood Dr.,Seminole, FL 33772

My recommendation would be to plan to arrive at Laramie or Pueblo and RON. Then get an early start, before the winds pick up, and go over the mountains in smooth air. If you go in the afternoon, just make sure the winds are below 20 knots for both passenger comfort and safety. Mountain winds can be brutal and unforgiving. Also, remember to cross all passes and ridges at a 45 degree angle to make a turn back quicker and safer. The State of Colorado prints a Colorado Aeronautical Chart that has all of the preferred routes, altitudes, airports and more. You can request a copy by going to www.coloradoaeronautics.org and downloading the book or request a hard copy by mailing: Colorado Division of Aeronautics c/o Airport Directory Request 5126 Front Range Parkway Watkins, CO 80137 Continued on page 4

WES TERN D IS TRIC T F LY - IN

Sedona, AZ - April 26-28 The Sedona fly-in is shaping up nicely with 13 registered to date. I'm ready for some southern sunshine, and my plane is just out from annual, so it's looking for a place to go. To recap, plan to meet at the hotel lobby at 6PM and we will go somewhere for dinner. I'll get some options for us. CE is Saturday morning with John Sedilo from the local fire department conducting. Have your on-line certification in hand so we can breeze through the CPR update. Note: $20 will be due by each CPR participant at the time of the course. Go to BLS for healthcare professionals for this. The FBO said they will give our group a $0.30 fuel discount. Saturday afternoon is on your own to explore. We will meet at the hotel lobby at 6:15 and head over to the Mesa Grill for dinner, which is included in your registration.

We are staying at the Sky Ranch Lodge. The basic room is $95 + $13.33 tax, ($10 per extra person in the room). Call the Sky Ranch Lodge at (888) 708-6400 and mention the FDA to receive your discount rate. See you in sunny Arizona! NATIONAL CONVENTION (con’t from p.3)

TRANSPORTATION The area around Steamboat is beautiful, but will require a rental car to reach the most scenic country. Cars can be reserved by calling Enterprise Car Rental, located in the Sheraton Resort, at 970-879-7442. Be sure to have them deliver the car to Bob Adams Field and provide them an estimated arrival time. The FDA will have two suburbans rented for small group travel and getting back and forth to the hotel from KSBS. They only hold 8 passengers so we will not be able to handle large numbers. On Saturday night we are going into the mountains for a wagon ride to our BBQ dinner. We’ll pool up in the lobby and make sure anyone without transportation has wheels to this event. If you plan to come commercially, you will need to schedule your arrival into Hayden’s Yampa Valley Airport. There is a shuttle from the airport to the hotel or you can make car reservations right there and drive. Call Budget at 970-276-2086, Hertz at 970-276-3304 or Avis at 970-276-3278. It’s about a 40 to 50 minute drive up through a beautiful valley to Steamboat Springs.

S A ILIN G D IS TRIC T F LY - IN WES TERN Kansas Fly-In May 31-June 2 Fellow FDAer's newly joined as well as seasoned veterans are invited to set their GPS guide to Abilene, KS (K78), just follow the PURPLE line! For your information there are two GPS approaches and for you young at heart there is a VOR-A approach off the Salina VOR (117.1) There is no hangar space available and just a few tie downs so put your personal TIE DOWNS in the luggage compartment as the Kansas Winds can be rather strong. (Canada Fishing trip 2011 comes to mind) If you have no idea what I am talking about you need to talk to a few good fishermen/ women about waiting for the winds to die down to go flying on the float planes! To make your reservation please contact the Holiday Inn Express, Abilene, KS (785) 263-4049. Be sure to tell them you are with the flying dentists group. I have transportation for you from the airport to the hotel as rental cars are nonexistence. Registration is now open on the website and a hard copy is on the back page of this newsletter. Sign up early to enjoy a wonderful Kansas summer weekend. Our CE will be an accounting of Oral Surgery in a depressed economy by your tour guide. I have quite a few stories of infections etc. that may spin some conversations on treatment. But you say, “How can Ol'Bart talk for such a long time.?” Well, I have a PILOT treat for you to enjoy. A very special friend of Ol'Bart's has just been awarded the distinguished

"FAA Wright Brothers Master Pilot Award". This award recognizes pilots who demonstrate professionalism, skill and aviation expertise by maintaining safe operations for 50 or more years. Master Pilot, Jim Tullis will discuss his 17,000 and counting, flight hours. His story began at Amelia Earhart's home town airport flying a Piper Colt (his shirt tail is still hanging there) to his corporate flying of the Cessna Citation for ADM Corporation as well as his countless hours as a CFI training new pilots and refreshing old ones on various flying techniques. Just ask me as he has kept me current in the Mooney! Hopefully he will talk about his experience flying the Cessna Sky Master. Now on a sad note one of our dining options, The Kirby House, has burnt to the ground. It was more than 125 years old and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Never fear we have arranged other fine dining option for our event.

The Kirby House, built in 1885

Fire on Feb 20, 2013

There will be fun in the Kansas summer winds both for dentist's and a pilot's mind alike. The ladies will have plenty to keep them busy, thus far I’ve scheduled a tour of the Seelye Mansion and the Eisenhower Center. Now I do not want anyone calling me from Abilene, Texas and wondering where everyone is holed up!!! Remember (K78) Abilene, Kansas!!!! Hope to see you there. Contact Bart Bycroft 785-825-2244

FDA ANNUAL FISHING Gone Fishing ! FDA Fisherman & Women Manitoba, Canada August 1-5 August 1-5 are the dates for our return to Eagle Nest Lodge on the Winnipeg River in Manitoba. We will fly in on Thursday and out on Monday with three days of fishing. All the fresh walleye you can eat for shore lunch each day prepared by our guides, trophy sized Northern Pike lurk in every bay waiting for you to coax them out, and some of the most beautiful sights, smells, and scenery that North America has to offer await you on the majestic Winnipeg River. Eagles are of course present, and black bear and moose are annual sightings by our fishermen. 27 FDA fishermen are signed up and the camp holds 32. A few more and we will fill the entire camp with the FDAers. Sequester hasn’t hurt this trip’s border crossing. We use a quaint, rural airport that straddles the US Canada border next to a highway. The identifier is 48Y. The border agents check the highway out one side of their building and occasionally an airplane that pulls up on the other. Past newsletters have other details, www.flyingdentists.org. Remember we will not repeat this trip next year; we are all going to Oshkosh. This is the perfect laid back fishing trip to take a son, daughter, or spouse. Currently we have 6 FDA wives coming and the

gals have won the big fish contest 2 of the last 3 years….did I say there was some light gambling? Registration is $75 per person. This will guarantee you plenty of drinks, munchies, apre’s fish, and a tacky trip favor. Please send your registration form to Stacy at the central office. Join us now if you can!

F A L L M EETI N G NASA Director to speak at Fredericksburg Fly-In October 10-13, 2013. Hold the dates! Cancel anything on the calendar that conflicts! This will be one fly-in that you will NOT want to miss. October 10-13, 2013, Hanger Hotel, Fredericksburg, TX. This will be the FDA's 3rd visit to this home-run location. So even if you've been before, we promise to add more outstanding adventures to the trip; it will be a blast! To a Texan, the Hill Country is the premier location to visit, and for us lucky few, to live. It is a cross between the Arizona desert and the Ozarks, creating the perfect blend of weather and beauty.

National Museum of the Pacific War

Our home base will be the world famous Hanger Hotel. This lodging experience is in a re-created WW2 hanger, with all the decor and settings of the time, but done first class. We will take advantage of being on a runway with flying opportunities and planned "activities" that will make this a day a pilot will always remember. For those that are ready to give flying a break, we will have many other activities available such as winery tours (this is the Napa Valley of Texas), golfing, unique shopping, and countless other possibilities. (see Fredericksburg links) A new attraction that was not present at the last Fredericksburg fly-in is the National Museum of the Pacific War. Now I am a WW2 history buff and you can quote me that this is the BEST WW2 museum that exists, Guaranteed!!! It is our luck that the Battle of Tarawa re-enactment will take place during our visit. As a group, we are targeting the Saturday, Oct 12, 3:30 showing, although you may choose a different time this weekend if you wish. Be aware that our board meeting will be Saturday morning. Please reserve your tickets soon via the link below as this event always sells out. Also be prepared to be taken back in time as this event is very realistic and lasts a full 90 minutes. Saturday evening we will have dinner at a fantastic venue with a very special guest speaker! From Apollo to the Space Station, Tom Moser, Director of Engineering for NASA, has a wealth of experience. This is one speaker you will not want to miss. (Bio link below) Reserve your room now by contacting the Hanger Hotel at 830-997-9990 and ask for the Flying Dentists group rate.
