What is the meaning of heat resistant alloy? What is the criterion to identify the heat resistant alloys? Give a typical list of cast and wrought heat resistant alloys. Explain their properties and important applications. [16]

Explain about various forms of high temperature corrosion and high temperature coatings of super alloys. [16]

What are the major alloying elements that may be present in nickel base alloys? Explain about them in detail. Also show their micro structures. [16]

Name typical applications where high temperatures are involved and use of super alloys is necessary. [8+8] Discuss the micro structural degradation of super alloys in normal operations above 7000C. Distinguish fully between cast super alloys and wrought super alloys with suitable examples. [8+8] Explain about the working principle of crucible test to study hot corrosion behavior of super alloys. Explain about stress rupture strength of super alloys. [9+7] Explain about the following phases in Ni-Fe super alloys. σ i) ii) μ iii) Laves Explain how gamma prime ( γ ′ ) strengthening takes place in nimonic alloys.[8+8] Explain in detail the melting and refining process in general for various types of super alloys indicating the furnaces used, their refractory lining and other details. [16] With a neat sketch, explain the working principle of hot isostatic pressing process with respect to different super alloys. Explain why powder metallurgy is indispensable for the manufacture of certain super alloy components. [8+8]
