With the help of suitable equations, explain the various factors to be considered in calculating the tractive effort of an electric locomotive. [16] 2. (a) Describe the construction and operation of coreless induction furnace. (b) Describe in detail and with a neat sketch the vertical core type furnace.[8+8] 3. (a) What are the various methods of electric welding? (b) Describe the various types of electric Arc welding processes.

4. With the help of a complete Speed-Time curve, discuss how different parameters of this curve change with the type of train service. [16] 5. (a) What is meant by load equalization? (b) Give reasons why the method of load equalization normally adopted with induction motors and dc shunt motors, but can not adopted with synchronous motor. [6+10] 6. Discuss the conditions that are needed for successful regenerative braking and suitability of d.c shunt, series and induction motor for regenerative braking. [16] 7. (a) Compare the merits and demerits of filament lamps and fluorescent lamps. (b) A work shop measures 15m×36m, 20 lamps of 500w each are used for lighting the workshop. The luminous efficiency of lamp is 15 Lumens/watt. Determine the illumination on the working plane, if the depreciation factor is 0.7 and the coefficient of utilization is 0.5. [6+10] 8. (a) Prove that the illumination on any surface is proportional to cos3 θ where θ is the angle between normal at that point and direction of flux. (b) An advertisement board 5m square is fixed to a wall with bottom edge near the ground. A lamp fitting giving a luminous intensity of 4000 cd in all directions towards the board is fixed level with the bottomof the board and 7m away, giving maximum illumination at the centre of the bottom edge. (b) A laminated wooden board 30 × 15 × 2.5 cubic cm thick to be heated from 10 0 C to 160 0 C in 10 minutes by dielectric heating. The frequency employed is 30 MHZ. The specific heat of wood is 1465J/kg/0 C. [6+10] 3. What are the methods available for starting induction motors? Draw connection diagrams for a star-delta starter and Auto-Transformer starter. [16] 4. Discuss the various types of functions performed by the tractive effort developed by a traction Unit. [16] 5. Explain in detail the advantages of composite system of traction employing 25KV a.c as traction system. [16] 6. (a) Name and describe various resistance welding processes. (b) Enlist the advantages of AC arc welding machines.

7. (a) Discuss the laws of illumination and its limitations is actual practice. (b) A drawing office containing a number of boards and having a total effective area of 70m2 is lit by a number of 40 watts incandescent lamps giving 11 lumens/watt. An illumination of 80 lux is required on the drawing boards. Assuming that 60% of the total light emitted by the lamps is available for illuminating the drawing boards, estimate the number of lamps required.[8+8] 8. A locomotive for a city service is proposed to have a scheduled speed of 45 kmph and the distance between the stations is 2.8 km. The track is assumed to be level. Each stop is 30 sec. duration. Using simplified N-T curve, calculate maximum speed. α = 2kmphps; β = 3.2 kmphps. The dead weight is 16 tonnes; rotational inertia is 10% of dead weight. (a) Explain why it is economical to use few large sources of light mounted high for industrial use than many sources of low output. How the value of coefficient of adhesion affects the slipping and skidding of the driving wheels of traction unit? [16] 5. Draw the connection diagram of the equipment for automatically starting: (a) A squirrel cage induction motor by means of an auto-transformer (b) A slip ring induction motor by means of resistive in the rotor circuit.

7. The distance between two stations is 1.92 km. The schedule speed and duration of stops respectively are 40 kmph and 20 sec. Assume quadrilateral approximation of Speed-Time curve. Cresting and braking retardations are 0.16 kmphps and 3.2 kmphps respectively. Determine the acceleration if speed at end of accelerating period is 60.8 kmph.
