Bartlesville Education Promise presents 2016 Summer Transition Camps Due to the efforts of the Bartlesville Education Promise, Central and Madison Middle School will both be offering transition camps this summer. The week-long camps are designed for students transitioning from primary school to middle school. Stu-

dents new to the district are also invited to attend the camps. The idea for the camps stems from the 2013 bond issue. One of the major goals for the bond issue was to transition into a four-year high school, reducing the number of transitions for Bartlesville stuCAMPS - Continued to page 10

Nikki Benson and Tyler Vaclaw began their new term on the Bartlesville Public School District Board of Education at Monday evening’s Board of Education meeting. Benson and Vaclaw were sworn in following the board’s acknowledgement of the receipt of certificate of election from the Washington County Election Board. Both ran unopposed and will continue to occupy the seat they previously held. Benson represents District 6, while Vaclaw represents District 5. Benson and Vaclaw will serve a four-year term on the board, with the term set to expire in February 2020. Additionally, in voting among Board of Education members, the group selected its officers for the upcoming year at Monday’s meeting. Doug Divelbiss reported at last month’s board meeting that he would be stepping down as president. He has served on the board for ten years and has been president since 2011. Previously, he served as vice-president from 2009-2011. Divelbiss has been a tremenBOE- Continued to page 11

Life Principle of the Month: Honesty

Each month, the Bartlesville Public School District and the Bartlesville Regional United Way designate a Great Expectations Life Principle as Life Principle of the Month. BPSD students, staff and members of the Bartlesville community are encouraged to incorporate the life principle into their respective lifestyles as habit. The word of the month for February is “honesty,” which means, “being truthful in your words or actions.” We will practice virtuous living using the Life Principles.

dents. “Research shows at-risk students struggle when they change schools,” says Chuck McCauley, BPSD executive director of secondary education. “The secondary school reconfiguration reduces the number of school transition for students from three to two, which correlates with improved student achievement and fewer drop-outs. It is our hope that by providing these camps, we can offer another pathway to improve student achievement within our district.” There will be three sessions of the transition camps offered throughout the month of July. The first camp will run July 11-15. A second camp will run July 18-22; and a final camp will be held July 25-29. Through collaborative activities and games, students will become familiar with their new school, the procedures, and classmates. Participants will have the opportunity to explore unique and exciting adventures in reading, math, computers, and leadership. “This camp provides a huge benefit for incoming sixth graders, allowing them to experience our middle schools before the actual school year starts,” says Ryan Huff, Central Middle School principal. “This camp will have some of our teachers involved and that will allow the students to start developing relationships with the teachers earlier than in the past.”

CAMPS - Continued from page 1

The camps will mix academic and social skills instruction. Some of the activities and curriculum from the week will include: core subject integration into everyday activities such as cooking, art, and nature; health, hygiene, and fitness; time management; understanding the cafeteria and menu; navigating the building; understanding the schedule; and much more. Registration for the camps will open March 21. Forms will be available online and in the school offices, and must be turned into the respective school office. Transportation for the camps will be provided. Bus pick up will be at centralized locations. Those locations will be determined by May 31 and will be posted on the school websites. Breakfast and lunch will be served daily throughout the camp. Through the generosity of the Bartlesville Education Promise, there is only a $10 fee to attend the camps. The fee includes the camp activities/curriculum, breakfast, lunch, and a t-shirt. “Without the funds provided by the Bartlesville Education Promise, this incredible opportunity for our sixth graders would not be possible,” says Joey Eidson, Madison Middle School principal. “We are extremely grateful to this organization for securing the funds to allow us to provide this opportunity.”

BPSD volunteer opportunities available Currently, the BPSD is in need of volunteers to serve as tutors, mentors, lunch buddies, classroom helpers, elementary school crossing guards, and state test proctors. If you are not interested in any of the volunteer opportunities listed, the BPSD will gladly find tasks that fit your volunteer interests. In order to become a BPSD volunteer, you must be 18 or older, be of good moral character, complete a volunteer inquiry form and pass a background check. Additionally, all volunteers must complete a volunteer orientation program and work under the direct supervision of BPSD staff while

completing assigned volunteer tasks. Volunteering is a great way to get involved with the youth of the Bartlesville community and make an impact. “We are thankful for any amount of time our volunteers are willing/able to give to help our students and schools be more successful,” added District Volunteer Coordinator, Christina Rigdon. To begin the sign-up process, please contact Christina Rigdon, at 918-337-6231 ext. 1635 or RigdonCV@ bps-ok.org.
