Director’s Corner

Dear Parents/Guardians of BCA, I believe that an important component of a good school is the partnership between the school and the parents who work together for the best interest of the children. I consider the close partnership between home and school as one of the exceptional strengths of BCA. Thank you for your continued support and your assistance in making sure that your child is successful in school.

Dear BCA Families, Our goal at BCA is to promote higher standards and expectations that all of our scholars will be college and career ready. Preparing students for college and career readiness is their voucher to success in the 21st century global economy. The challenge is to stay focused on helping your scholar reach their highest potential.

I would like to thank all of the family and friends of BCA who have volunteered their time and effort this month and a special thank you to the PTC who have done an outstanding job of assisting the faculty and staff, all while planning fundraisers to support the purchasing of materials for our school. A special thank you for planning our annual Trunk-R-Treat; it was such a wonderful day to spend with the families and friends of BCA

The 5K Walk/Run & Kid’s Fun Run event, scheduled for Saturday, November 5, 2016, is underway. Sponsor names will appear on the race day shirt. Please visit our website at www.bcacharter.org for additional information. In addition to the annual 5K, our First Annual BCA GALA will be held on Saturday evening, March 25, 2017. Please mark your calendar and more information is forth coming.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Thanksgiving Holiday!

Congratulations on our Quiz Bowl, Cross Country and Soccer Teams! Go BCA Torchbearers!

Sincerely,

In service for your children,

Dr. Melanie Becnel

November is already here and everything at school is moving along. All scholars have been tested and the professionals now have a target goal for each scholar. Accelerated Reader (AR) has been in place for a few years now at BCA. According to research, children who read at least 20 minutes a day with a 90% comprehension rate on AR quizzes see the greatest gains. Therefore, it is very important that you child have at least 20 minutes set aside for reading during each day. A new addition to BCA this year is Accelerated Math (AM). Students work through AM’s Core Progress learning progressions to master Common Core State Standards and foundational math skills. Just like learning an instrument or sport, your child needs practice to become better at math. Encourage your child to take their time to solve problems, and to challenge them to stick with it even when it feels hard. This is called “productive struggle,” and is very important for children mastering math. If you have any questions please contact your scholar’s professional at any time. They will be more than happy to answer any questions.

Wow, we’ve been busy! I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the parents and scholars for their outstanding involvement and performance in all of our extracurricular and co-curricular activities. Our Math Counts and Quiz Bowl teams have been staying after school weekly to prepare for their competitions and formidably compete in the respective competitions. The Quiz Bowl team competed in their first ever match and defeated Berwick Jr. High on October 18. The team now moves on to the next round of the competition in December. Thank you to Damon and Andrea Stentz for your leadership with our Quiz Bowl team. Our Math Counts team has partnered with the Math Department at NSU. We would like to thank Dr. Chad Young, Dr. Scott Beslin, and the NSU math majors for helping our team prepare for the upcoming competition. This has truly been a great learning experience for all. The Cross Country and Soccer Teams have also shown tremendous dedication and put in lots of practice hours. The Cross Country season is wrapping up with the final meet in early November. Congratulations to all of our runners for proudly representing BCA, often finishing as top contenders. As special congratulations goes out to Cullen Champagne (1st Place/5:29), Kade Babin (7th place (5:41), Jack Kerne (8th place/5:42), and Abby Barbera (5th place/6:52) for their performance in the Assumption meet on October 19. Thanks to all runners and Coaches Himel and Benoit for a great season

Best Regards, Lisa Owens, M.ED. Academic Assessment Coordinator
