The purchase of the books would allow greater access for students enrolled in the advanced placement courses.
First Reading of New Writing Curriculum Executive Director and Chief Academic Officer Paula Koehler-Martin presented the district’s recommendation of an updated K-12 writing curriculum to the board. The recommended curriculum is “Units of Study in Opinion, Information, and Narrative Writing” for grades K-8 Language Arts instruction, and “Come to Class: Lessons for High School Writers” for use in high school English Language Arts classes. A committee of administrators and teachers conducted a thorough review of multiple writing curricula before making the recommendation. The committee recommended these two curricula because of the current need to implement a consistent approach to writing instruction throughout the district and provide a set of resources that will meet the needs of students and teachers in the classroom. Multiple members of the committee spoke to the quality of the curriculum and how it supports students to become “authentic writers,” aligns with current Common Core State Standards, and provides the necessary instructional supports for teachers and administrators. The cost for adoption is approximately $76,000 which has been budgeted within the Teaching and Learning Department. A second reading and possible adoption of the curriculum will be held at the next Regular Board Meeting on Monday, July 14, 2014.
