Bird Feeding Area

We have Woodpeckers and Goldcrests and Jays as well as Warblers and garden birds such as blackbirds, wrens, robins and blue tits on site but we would like to encourage lots more. We would like to create a large feeding area in the grass area to the left of the pathway to the cottage from the drop off area. This will be in view of the kitchen window in the cottage and there are lots of bird books in the cottage to use to identify what you see. We have already planted some rowan trees but you can… What you could do:

Squirrel proof and easy clean would be great!



Source different heights and types of bird tables…older girls or trefoil members may want to do a bit of woodwork, or you might write to local garden centres or pet suppliers for donations.



There are lots of different types of hanging feeders, maybe the girls could write for donations or do a bird themed fundraising…



Sourcing fence posts and brackets to hang the feeders from.



Fundraising for seed (we have a potential sponsor if a group wants to fill in a grant application).



Make cone, coconut or fat ball hanging feeders.



Planting fruiting shrubs for nesting.



Making nest boxes to put up around the site. Some swallow boxes would be nice on the cottage, or a House Sparrow terrace block.



Water bowl for drinking and bathing.



Make bird identification sheets for laminating and using on site using photos from the internet or your own pictures!



Plan a bird watch!



Host a bird feeding activity day setting up the area with all the tables and feeders. Maybe link to a Division event?



Storage crates and scoops to store all the different types of feed so residential groups can feed easily.

We will need a coordinator for sponsorship letter addresses to ensure we do not all send donation request letters to all the same suppliers.
